Coindentally, the day that we sent out our last article, "Food Waste: The Much-Forgotten Global "Pandemic"", President Xi also announced his new campaign against food waste.

And no, we have no direct communication with his team. But we are not complaining - food waste is an extremely serious problem that needs the Chinese government's intervention and effective policies to tackle it.

CHINA'S NEW CAMPAIGN AGAINST FOOD WASTE

The 'Clean Plate' campaign comes after the massive floods that have affected the country’s traditional rice production areas and the coronavirus pandemic disrupting food supply chains.

It is common to see leftovers in restaurants, particularly at wedding banquets. "Chinese like to splurge on food when hosting guests as a sign of hospitality," said Wang Ping, an executive with an investment bank in Shanghai.

Patrons of the country’s catering industry each wasted an average 11.7 per cent of their meal, according to a report co-authored by the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2018.

(Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research)

In large gatherings, the rate rose to 38 per cent, while students threw away a third of the contents in their school lunchboxes.

Following Mr Xi's message, the Wuhan Catering Industry Association urged restaurants in the city to limit the number of dishes served to diners - implementing a system where groups must order one dish less than the number of diners. Under this system dubbed "N-1", a group of 10 people can only order 9 dishes.

It's not the first time China has launched an anti food waste campaign. In 2013, the "Operation Empty Plate" campaign was launched - though that targeted extravagant feasts and reception held by officials, rather than putting the onus on the public.
