Astrid Rolle: Welcome back to Hamburg, welcome to the IF Design Award Jury 2016. Again, in shelter 52, when this year 5,300 entries will be shown and 60 judges will test them individually. And in this year we have new disciplines, beside product, package chain, communication, interior architecture and professional concept. We have the two disciplines, architecture and service designer. We are looking forward to all new entries, to active discussion, and to exciting innovations.
Before starting the assessment work the international jury members meet on the first evening fun and formal warm up. Here, they also meet the partners on the category boards. And of course, they can get a first overview of all entries submitted this year. The case is clear for CEO Ralph Wiegmann, this years’ entries have a very high quality.
Ralph Weigmann: Which makes it more difficult for the judges to differentiate, up to here is no award, and from here, it is award. This bottom line that’s something which is very difficult to define you know. That’s a big challenge for the judges by tomorrow morning to really find the common level of understanding this is where we giving the award and this is the level not receiving an award.
Olivia Herms:I expect to get deeper and to the categories I have to judge. And I’m really like interested in seeing how the discussion will be with other members of the jury and see how we get to the point in the end.
Marc Mar: I’m expecting a lot of work and a lot of fun with my partner U(人名),from Nomart. And I think we’re getting in touch really good now. I think we’re a good team, and I think it will be hard but even easy.
The judges from 15 countries are full with anticipation, with great respect they’re looking forward to their work. On day 2, the jury members are getting down to business. In small groups the judges evaluate all entries and decide whether they will be IF awarded or not. In case of high controversy, they decided to reset the second round. But there is a time limit and there is a high number of entries. The discipline production alone has three thousand.
Astrid Rolle: And of course every single entry has to be understood, checked and tested properly and that is quite a challenge for the jury and that is also my question: you have to judge a lot of products how do you make sure to pay sufficient attention on every single one.
Thomas Paulen: Hello, well, I have to say that’s a tough job so I look a little tired now. But I think between the juries we manage to give every applicants the attention that they deserve. Because we’re all in the field of design for a long time and we come from different perspectives so sometimes you don’t know or you’re in doubt, someone comes from different perspective and then you say yeah, I know I understand we have to give them an award or not.
Josephine Akvama Hoffmeyer: We focus on each entry we don’t make up the entries, we really try to focus on each kind of entry.
Carl Liu: It’s great. With group discussion I think it really helps to see from different point of view. So I think group discussion help a lot to when we make decisions.
That is of course what the IF Design Award stands for high professionalism, seriousness and integrity. After every entries judged by the responsible group the entire jury of the discipline product start the veto round. Every member has the option to put single entry up to discussion again.
Astrid Rolle: Every entry which got a veto today will be concludingly discussed tomorrow morning and now after a long day with many technical discussions and decisions already the juries leave the shelter 52 and makes the jump over the river Aber right into Hafencity. Here, in Elbarkaden the permanent exhibition of the IF Design Award takes place and this is not only very interesting for visitors but is also part of winners’ package because every single awarded entry will be shown in here for almost 3 months.
Third and last day, the final decisions. The day starts out with the veto round, the jury members argue pros and cons of the debated entries. The final decision is reached by the majority vote. These debates can be quite lively and some formal judgements will be tilt.
Morten Georgsen: I think it’s a good exercise for all of us that we have the chance to look at things from a different perspective.
Prof. Fritz Frenkler: This is a professional design award. And I think the open for the arguments and of course we make very short arguments, make short votation and then we finish the discussion because we’ve all made decision and we can’t continue back and forth.
At last it is time for the high point of the event the nomination and choosing of the IF gold award winners. In all disciplines together, only 75. And the especially exciting moment for all jury members.
Astrid Rolle: The hard work is done. The final decisions are made and now it’s time for conclusion by IF CEO Ralph Wiegmann. Mr.Wiegmann what was special this year?
Ralph Wiegmann: The judges, the entries and the time management.
Astrid Rolle: So how do you judge the judges?
Ralph Wiegmann: They were fair, they were competent, they were quick, and they were decision making.
Astrid Rolle: What about the level of the entries?
Ralph Wiegmann: Very high, which makes it extremely difficult for judges but they managed it in a terrific way.
Astrid Rolle: And what about the gold award winners? Who are they?
Ralph Wiegmann: We will keep the secret until the very last minute.
Astrid Rolle: We keep the secret until 26th of February in the BMW world in Munich and we say goodbye from Hamburg.
Ralph Wiegmann:
Olivia Herms:
Astrid Rolle:
Thomas Paulen:
Josephine Akvama Hoffmeyer:
Morten Georgsen:
Ralph Wiegmann:
Astrid Rolle:
Ralph Wiegmann:
Astrid Rolle:
Ralph Wiegmann:
Astrid Rolle:
Ralph Wiegmann:
