Dear professors, teachers, graduates, families and friends, Good morning!

I’m TIAN Yue, a graduate of Master of Arts in Simultaneous Interpreting Programme. It’s my great honor to make this speech. For most of us, today marks a new chapter into the real world. It’s the time to celebrate and to express deep gratitude to all the people who have guided us through this long journey and made this day possible.

29th of June is the day when I left my beloved Simultaneous Interpreting Lab. I posted on my WeChat moments—“this is not the end of the story”.

Today, 6th of November, is the day to say thank you. On behalf of all the graduates, I would like to start by thanking our teachers and fellow students for their great support, our families for raising us over the years, and our alma mater for all that it has provided for us! It is in this university, we are seen, heard, respected, and given chance to shine. It’s in this university, we are continuously encouraged and supported by our dear teachers, so we are able to dream big while being down-to-earth.

As a student who set the goal of learning simultaneous interpreting more than ten years ago, at this moment, I want to recall a quote from The Alchemist that carried me through tough times——“When you really want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” Actually I have gained far from what I want to learn in this university.

As for simultaneous interpreting majors, we learned progress comes from doing small and smart things every ordinary day. For 2 straight years, we spend over 10 hours a day to hone interpreting skills. For 5 years in a row, students from our program have made inspiring progress and achievements. In the first class, Professor Yun Sui said each of us has talents in a certain area and we will stand out in either interpreting profession or other fields. I can still remember after a painful failure, Dr. Liwen Chang told me that not achieving desired success too quickly is a great luck. You will be more modest and be prepared for the next opportunity. ”

The story of our program is just a segment of many inspiring stories on this campus. For fellow graduates, we all went through exhausting and struggling days, experiencing sweets and bitters. My sister, a junior undergraduate of CUHK-Shenzhen shared the same feeling. “I have come to the right place and find my direction.” She said to me. The demanding learning experience in CUHK-Shenzhen has equipped us with the abilities to navigate in this challenging world and get access to more opportunities and possibilities.

Helping all students to make breakthroughs and become better selves is one of the uniqueness of CUHK-Shenzhen. With the education I received, when I chose a career, it was also my aspiration to help others become better selves. Now, I have made up mind to work in the field of education in Shenzhen where I can help others with my knowledge and keep the passion for my major.

Today is the day to bid farewell. In a time filled with anxiety and peer pressure, we need to keep in mind that it’s a privilege to have staunch support and guidance from people you trust and it’s a privilege to receive education in CUHK-Shenzhen. In the post-pandemic world full of uncertainties, it’s a privilege to live a peaceful and normal life in China. What we have today is a combination of luck and efforts of countless people who devoted themselves to great undertakings. The only question remains, with all the privileges that we have, how do we navigate our way out of difficulties without losing our original goals and can we be the beacon for others on their voyage in this universe?

On the road ahead, may we dream big while being down-to-earth; stay brave while being humble and optimistic; exert our best while embracing short-lived disappointments; and strive to shine while bringing light to others. Let us stay true to our passions and continue to persevere in what we love, believing that  miracles will happen one day! Hopefully, there will be much more to share when we meet next time. Please do remember that today is not the end of our story, but the beginning of something better.

Congratulations to the class of 2021!
