Distinguished President Xu Yansheng, Professor Luo Zhiquan, dear faculty, students, family members and friends from all walks of life, Good morning!

I am Zhang Jiawei, a Class-of-2021 Ph.D. student in Computer and Information Engineering at the School of Science and Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. At this moment, I am on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), starting my post-doctoral research work. I am delighted to have earned my Ph.D. through years of hard work and am honoured to stand here as a representative of Ph.D. graduates to express my gratitude to the faculty and professors who have been with us over the years.

These five years at CUHK-Shenzhen have been immensely enjoyable and fulfilling. The University not only provides first-class hardware and software facilities, but also introduces us to knowledgeable yet approachable professors, enthusiastic and responsible staff, and a group of like-minded friends.

As a Ph.D. student, I would like start with my research experience at this university. CUHK-Shenzhen boasts a wealth of academic resources and an excellent academic atmosphere where one can freely explore science and technology. In addition to fundamental subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, the University also taps into the highly sought-after research areas such as big data, robotics, communications, new energy, smart medicine and blockchain. With an emphasis on interdisciplinary research, the University encourages solutions to fundamental theoretical problems in practical applications. As a result, we are empowered to seek out technological innovation across disciplines and contribute to cutting-edge research topics.

Next, I would like to talk about my research interests: optimization theory and algorithms.

My research interest includes optimization theory and algorithms. Optimization is a classical field in applied mathematics. The main focus of optimization is to maximize or to minimize a function. Solving an optimization problem is a fundamental problem in many practical applications. For example, sometimes we have collected some data and we want to learn from the data to do prediction on the unknown world. Then we need build a model to predict based on this data. The models are usually described by some parameters and finding the optimal parameters requires to solve an optimization problem (minimizing a loss function). Another example is the so-called resource allocation. Usually we need to allocate limited resource to attain highest reward. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the medical resource is limited and we need to learn a scheme to treat more patients.

These interesting problems are all optimization problems. My research focuses on finding efficient, stable algorithms for solving some important optimization problems and analyse the structures of some interesting optimization problems.

Our papers have been published in top journals and top conferences such as SIAM Journal on Optimization (SIOPT), IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing (IEEE TSP) and Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) .

As a Ph.D. student, I enjoy thinking about mathematic problems. I enjoy breaking through the boundary of the human knowledge and going deep to the essence of problems. I also enjoy finding new and good methods to solve important problems. These give me continuous motivation and interests to do research. With such strong interests, I can integrate my research into my life. I enjoy thinking about maths problems when I am walking, waiting for someone, taking a car and taking a shower. This helps me fully utilize the time and give me many inspirations.

I am honoured to have been supervised by Professor Luo Zhiquan during my Ph.D. studies at CUHK-Shenzhen. Professor Luo was very strict with us academically and took great care to help us improve our research skills. I have learnt a lot from him, including how to identify valuable research topics, how to use and create mathematical tools to solve difficult problems, and how to communicate and present my research. I am, of course, indebted to a long list of excellent teachers and students at the University. Some of my research findings have also been inspired by my interactions with them.

I would like to thank the University for giving me one of the most important platforms in my life, which has enabled me to conduct post-doctoral research in the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In the future, I plan to pursue a career in scientific research at a university or research institution, and I wish to become an outstanding scholar on a par with Professor Luo. I will keep working hard to produce more valuable research and make contributions to China and the world in the academic field.

My fellow students, I hope that all of you will be able to clarify your goals and then, regardless of obstacles, stick to what you love and realise your values at CUHK-Shenzhen.

To conclude, I would like to thank the University once again for giving me a platform to explore freely, to thank Prof. Luo and every teacher at the University for their nurturing, to thank my fellow students for their help and support, and to thank my family for their constant love, understanding and selfless dedication. I could not have come this far without everyone's support. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Shenzhen is a place that embraces every talent.

Dear graduates, I don't know when and where we will meet again after today's farewell. But as President Xu Yangsheng said in his farewell speech, "Even if the whole world goes dark, there is always a light on for us in Longgang." Wherever we are, our identities as CUHK-Shenzhen graduates will remain, motivating us to keep moving forward. And on the way forward, the blessings and encouragement of our teachers, family and friends will always be with us.

Thank you all, and wish all of us the best future.
