The Time Out Family Play Date: The Shand & Friia families
Every month, we get two families to go on the Time Out Family Play Date where we get both kids and parents to review a venue or an exhibition and get their verdict on whether it’s worth heading to.
For this month, we sent the Friia and Shand families to the BIrd’s Nest to give us the lowdown at Bricklive’s Animal Paradise exhibit!

What the Play Daters thought:
Did you enjoy the exhibit?
Elise: I loved it! Especially the ocean theme section. There was a Lego pool with all blue and white legos where I made a mermaid and two fish. What was the most amazing was the giraffe made from legos. I read that it took 110,000 Legos to build and was big and tall like a real giraffe.
Aliya: I love playing with Legos and watching Lego movies so it was awesome! I thought the Snow and Ice section was best. It had a huge polar bear the same size as a real one but made of Lego. It also has a Lego boat, a penguin catching game and a Lego Friends section.
What game did the both of you love playing?
Elise: The feed the killer whale game. There was a trebuchet built out of Legos and we had to launch seaweed, green lego bricks, into the killer whale’s mouth.
Aliya: It was in the Ocean section and we even went back to play it again once we finished walking around the exhibition.
Would you recommend your friends come?
Elise: Yes! They would all enjoying playing with Lego and looking at all the Lego-brick animals.
Aliya: Yes! All my friends love Lego and at this exhibition, you can play with more Lego than you have ever seen!
What the parents thought:
Did the kids enjoy themselves?
Naza: Aliya really enjoyed it. After three hours of playing, building and exploring the different sections she wanted to go back and start again from the beginning!
Carey: Elise didn’t want to leave. She could have stayed the entire day.
Was it educational?
Naza: There was a bit of learning about different habitats and there was a strong element of creativity with so many different games and construction stations scattered about the exhibition. Children can build something with passion in a safe environment.
Carey: There were activities in the exhibit that you could make educational, but the the displays and activities themselves weren’t. There was a car building activity, and we made it educational by helping the girls build a variety of cars, one that couldn’t break going down the ramp, and a car that could get to the bottom the fastest. But for the most part it was just fun and games.
Would you recommend other parents bring their children?
Naza: Yes definitely. But be prepared to stay for a while and prepare an ‘exit strategy’ to make sure your children know when it’s time to leave.
Carey: Yes, although the activities seem limited compared to the price point – It’s quite high per person, to see the exhibit and build with Legos.
