9 things to look out for this November with the kids

TimeOutFamily 2020-11-16

Goodbye Halloween; hello November. It's time to welcome Thanksgiving and Christmas events, some we've mentioned below. And with the weather getting colder, if there are any more activities on your Autumn bucket list that you haven't ticked off yet, then this is probably your last month to get those done.

We'll keep updating events on our website as they come, so make sure to bookmark these pages for the latest updates. For links, addresses and more, click Read More at the bottom.

Get more activities when you tap on Read More at the bottom or go straight to our menu for the general listings. And in case you're an event organiser with an upcoming event you'd like to promote, here's how to add your event to our website.

Happy November, Beijing!

Thanksgiving events

Photo: The Opposite HouseThe fourth Thursday of November is coming soon, which means Thanksgiving and turkey season is back. The Opposite House has already started accepting to-go orders for their Thanksgiving sets, and enjoy a 15 percent discount if you order before Friday 22. Two other places also offering Thanksgiving feasts are the restaurants at Conrad Beijing and Signature's Restaurant. Follow our WeChat account or, better yet, bookmark this page to know what other places are serving Thanksgiving feasts as soon as we know about them:

Open House events

For an international school in German, check out the Swiss School on Tuesday 5. Or perhaps you're looking for a program for your littler ones from ages 4-24 months. In that case, check out The Children's House's Infant Class. For a Montessori program, you'll want to check out Blossom Montessori on Saturday 16. For your older children, the Western Academy of Beijing is opening its doors to prospective parents of Middle Schoolers and High Schoolers on Wednesday 27. If you're based in Shunyi and looking for a kindergarten for your child, Dulwich College Beijing is also having an Open House on Monday 11. More information including addresses and times here:

The city comes alive with the many stage performances happening this month, such as The Canadian International School of Beijing students' The Elf Musical and Almost Maine, the popular Blue Man Group,  Matilda the Musicalthe Hunchback of Notre Dame, Titanic: The Musical, Evita: The Musical, Pirates of the Caribbean concert to name a few. Here are even more options:

Don't let Beijing's most beautiful season pass you by without heading out and meeting up with Mother Nature. Autumn is arguably the most pleasant season in Beijing, as the skies clear and foliage bursts into colour. Go in search of golds and reds at these key spots around Beijing.

Christmas and Winter events

If you think Christmas events are taking place in December, then you haven't been in Beijing long enough. Advance tickets are now selling for the popular German Charity Christmas Bazaar and if you're planning to go, then get yours before they're all sold out. Some others happening this month is Roundabout's Charity Bazaar this weekend, where Dave's Studio will also be holding photo sessions for 80RMB and BCIS' Christmas Bazaar (aka the 2nd International Craft Bazaar) happening at the end of the month. More information here:

Films

Elsa and Anna are back to steal your children's hearts (and your soundwaves) when they show in theatres on Friday 22. Other big names coming to the screen as well are Charlie's Angels, The Farewell, the surreal The Extraordinary Journey of The Fakir and Terminator for those with older kids. For children who would like to dabble in the performing arts, check out Beijing Playhouse's upcoming A Holly Jolly Robin Hood camp from December 23 to January 4 (WeChat: 874686778). We'll update the website as more camps come in.

Join an earth-friendly workshop

If your children aren't in school from Wednesday 13 to Friday 15 next week, then perhaps sign them up for Atelier's upcoming recycling workshop for kids 8 and up. Children will learn how to recycle, its process and its importance. Then children will put all that knowledge and create something concrete with it thanks to their DIY enlightened paper houses project. More information here.

For something on a weekend, join How To Make a Fabric Doll Workshop and an interactive workshop afterwards this Sunday 10. The bilingual workshops aim to raise awareness of environmental consciousness as well as the different sea creatures and wild animal protection. In the How To Make a Fabric Doll Workshop, children will learn how to make a fabric dolphin or whale. It will be held from 2.30-4.30pm and will cost 280RMB per child (218RMB if you bring your own garment); children 7 and below will need to be accompanied by an adult. The interactive workshop from 4.30-5.30pm will engage the students to come up with their ideas on what steps they need to take to become more environmentally responsible. The event will be held at the Lane Bridge Clubhouse (9 Laiguangying Dong Lu. 朝阳区来广营东路.). Add the organiser (WeChat: LukeEve2004) for more information or to join.

Head out before it gets too cold

Enjoy Autumn in its fullest by heading out into nature. Try Beijing Hikers' upcoming Kids Club hike this Sunday 10, where you'll walk up to the middle part of the Gubeikou Great Wall to take a look about the towers, hike along the wall, and then hike down to the adventure playground for play and picnic time. These relaxed outings give kids a chance to enjoy some family time in nature. Best for ages 5–12; younger children would need to be carried for most of the way on this hike. Price is 380RMB per adult, 180RMB for kids ages 6-12 and 150RMB for kids ages 3-5. More information on beijinghikers.com or contact them at 6432 2876 or info@beijinghikers.com.
