Curatorial Notes
Writer/Yao Siqing
I imaging…
I imaged this as a burning murder scene, an energy field of emotional legacies rearranging itself, clues popping up irregularly in an attempt to move the compressed and flattened daily routine of the past four years...
I imaged the comma on the back cover ofKubali 【1】escaping to the middle of Shit Rabbit 【2】to form the project's English title, which conveys a clearer sense of gnashing rhythm in its pronunciation. In Chinese, it echoes the title of a collection of everyday mobile phone photos: “To walk toward the dawn, you must put your slippers on”【3】. Much of all of the above comes from what Du Wenting has already created and shared on her WeChat Official Accounts: her experiences, mental states, paintings……as the extensions of Shanghai 2022. In this project, my role as a curator is very minimal, observational, appropriative and collage-like, enabling the minimalist spatialization of the results of the artist's past work into a hypertextual cavern, allowing them to play out a kind of loose narrativity that annotates each other. This approach derives both from the artist's creative identity itself and from the illustrated and comic book mediums that have deeply influenced her; and this pictorial narrative deserves to be noticed because it is here that everything that breaks down seems like conjecture. Between the different works are diffuse, unrelated transitions, things that run over the surfaces of the different senses, endlessly morphing, and thus succeeding in escaping from concepts and logic. It is not only open, but also extremely respectful of the viewer's mobility, kindly anticipating the magical power of “the Principle of Closure”【4】and “Synaesthesia”【5】occurring at the same time.
In the artist's own words, she is curious about and inquires into "ordinary things that attract attention"【6】, so it is destined to be a mentalized space, where all the textures, symbols and proportions have nothing to do with reality and everything to do with sensation. To an artist who has absorbed a wide range of nutrients from literature, music, and comics, they might be feet that have become too small to move, a bed that is too small to hold a head, a wall that has become coarse with sand, the heat of a red pepper explosion... the daily life of a lower species with extremely limited mobility like a shit bunny, walking in his slippers to the sunrise on the balcony.
I imaging that you come here and lent your eyes in order to tell your own story.
