蜂巢当代艺术中心荣幸地宣布，将于2023年11月8日至12月12日在蜂巢|上海推出艺术家林寿宇的个人回顾展。此次展览由蜂巢当代艺术中心国际发展部总监邵依洋策划，伦敦林寿宇基金会学术支持，特别致谢：Jean-Claude LIN Lü-Dun林履敦; Jean-Pierre LIN Sao Ming林少明; Sumi A R LIN; Katya LIN LODGE; Malu R J LIN SWAYNE。展览将聚焦林寿宇于1950至1980年代的重点创作，是林寿宇首次在中国大陆画廊的大型个展，也是蜂巢自2015年华人抽象大展“秩序的边界”后二度推出林寿宇先生的作品。
林寿宇，1933年生于台中雾峰林家宫保第，自1952年起旅居英国三十余年，2011年逝于台中。作为战后抽象艺术的代表，林寿宇曾于1964年参加第三届卡塞尔文献展，是首位参展该展览的华裔艺术家，并在随后的1967年与朱德群、赵无极等人一道入选第四十四届卡内基国际美术展，并与弗朗西斯·培根同时获得“威廉佛瑞纪念收藏奖”。胡安·米罗曾就其作品评价道：“林寿宇在白色的世界中，无人能及”。林寿宇的作品被众多极具声望的公共收藏机构所典藏，包括但不限于伦敦泰特美术馆、丹麦的路易斯安那现代美术馆、利物浦的沃克美术馆以及纽约布鲁克林美术馆、台北故宫博物院等。
林寿宇自幼即接受丰富多元的文化熏陶，英国米尔菲尔德学校的学习经历，使他沉浸于艺术与美学思想之中，随后他便在1954年考取了伦敦综合工艺学院（今西敏大学），研习建筑与艺术。林寿宇于创作初期进行了大量具象及抒情抽象油画的实验，并以“Lin Show Yu”为名发表了大量作品。但这些作品并未满足他对艺术的纯粹追求，上世纪50年代后期，拥有建筑与视觉艺术双学位的林寿宇，透过风格派、具体艺术、包豪斯、硬边、色域一派相承的“冷”抽象的系统，自然而然又轻易地让几何抽象、极简主义过渡到画家自己的绝对主义，伴随创作手法的逐渐精简以及美学观念的去芜存菁，他逐步转向几何抽象的立体作品的创作，“极简浮雕”于他对画面的雕琢中不断浮现，并成为其风格转型的关键节点，也是在这一时期，他开始以“Richard Lin”为名发表作品。建筑专业的出身，使林寿宇深受包豪斯现代建筑设计的启发和影响，在将其中的精确、严谨和绝对活用于自身艺术创作的同时，他还创造性地将东方老庄的哲学思考、中国的泼墨山水概念以及中国文人画中的“留白”空间融入到创作当中，在战后抽象艺术的发展历程中为留下了浓墨重彩的一笔，并间接掀起了国内有关“几何抽象”以及“极简主义”等西方艺术史创作风格的探讨。

Hive Center for Contemporary Art is honoured to announce the retrospective of Richard Lin Show Yu at Hive Shanghai, on view from 8 November to 12 December, 2023. This exhibition is organised by Laura Shao Yiyang, director of International Development at Hive. The exhibition is supported by the Estate of Richard Lin Show Yu, with special recognition to Jean-Claude LIN Lü-Dun, Jean-Pierre LIN Sao Ming, Sumi A R LIN, Katya LIN LODGE, and Malu R J LIN SWAYNE. This retrospective focuses on Richard Lin Show Yu’s significant works from the 1950s to the 1980s. It is Lin’s first major exhibition at a gallery in mainland of China, also his second time showing at Hive, following the 2015 major exhibition of Chinese abstractionists, “The Boundaries of Order”.
Born in 1933 in Taiwan as the eldest son and heir of a powerful Wufeng family, Richard Lin lived in the UK for more than thirty years since 1952, and died in Taichung in 2011. As one of the representative figures of post-war abstract art, Richard Lin was the first Chinese artist to participate in Documenta III in Kassel in 1964, and in 1967, together with Chu Teh-chun and Zao Wou-ki, he was selected to participate in the 44th Carnegie International Art Exhibition, where he was awarded the William Frew Memorial Purchase Award for the Collection, along with Francis Bacon.. Joan Miro once commented on his work: "In the world of white, no one can exceed you." In addition, Richard Lin's works are in the collections of many prestigious public collections, including but not limited to the Tate Gallery in London, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, the Walker Museum in Liverpool, the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York, and the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
Richard Lin was influenced by a plethora of cultures from a very young age. Immersed in art and aesthetics through his studies at Millfield School in England, he was admitted to the Polytechnic Institute in London (now University of Westminster) in 1954 to study architecture and art. In the early days of his work, Richard Lin experimented with a large number of figurative and lyrical abstract oil paintings, and published a large number of works under the name "Lin Show Yu". In the late 1950s, Richard Lin who had a double degree in architecture and visual arts, naturally and easily made the transition from geometric abstraction and minimalism to the painter's own Absolutism through De Stijl, Concrete art, Bauhaus, Hard-edge, and Color-field, and it was also during this period that he began to publish works under the name "Richard Lin". Inspired and influenced by the Bauhaus modern architectural design, Richard Lin applied the precision, rigor and absolute precision to his own artistic creation, and he also creatively integrated the philosophical thinking of Dongfang Laozhuang, the concept of Chinese ink-splashed landscape and the "blank" space in Chinese literati painting into his creation, leaving a strong mark in the development of abstract art after the war, and indirectly setting off the domestic "Geo-Abstraction" and "Minimalism" and other discussions on the creative style of Western art history.

It is a very daunting task to write about Richard Lin Show Yu. This prologue represents a distillation of my own reflections, regarding key aspects of his work experienced as a childhood bystander observer and later musings over the decades. Where possible, within the limitations of this brief account I draw upon archival sources within the Richard Lin Show Yu Estate Archive as pertinent illustrations. For the most part I am attempting to create an image of ideas and influences supporting his creative energy. The Estate of Richard LIN Show Yu would like to thank Hive Center for Contemporary Art, and in particular Laura Shao Yiyang, Director of International Development, and her team, for this exhibition.
