BIBA into WYEF Championship

During the epidemic, a group of BIBA juniors competed with players from various international schools and completed a splendid ASDAN Business Simulation with their sharp business acumen and affluent English presentation skills. During the May Day holiday, the BIBA team successfully advanced to the World Youth Economic Forum Championship to be held in the summer by winning third place in the Junior High School group.

As a well-known business and financial academic competition, ASDAN Business Simulation is based on a professional business simulation IT system, which fully simulates the business competition activities and the real market environment using decision-making processes from examples of company operations. The ASDAN Business Simulation uses English as the working language with 6-8 students forming one company. In the four major competition areas i.e., company operation, road show, business duel and commercial auction, the company that earns the most revenue wins the championship. Since the beginning of the competition, more than 220 games have been successfully held with the participation of over 30,000 students.

The ASDAN Business Simulation lasts for two days with three core sections: operational decision-making, company road show and business competition. It aims to enable students to acquire basic business knowledge while training their skills in teamwork, problem solving, quick learning, market analysis, public speaking and communication.

As the competition has drawn to an end temporarily, let's get to know this group of juniors through an interview.

Interview:

Q

What is the difference between ASDAN Business Simulation and other competitions?

Joyce Liu:

The ASDAN Business Simulation is very similar to a real workplace. Participating in this competition is a good experience and a good rehearsal helping us to improve our teamwork, market analysis, and public speaking skills.

The difference is that it is a competition you can increase your business acumen.

Tony Cao:

Mcqueen Guo:

As a first-time participant, its form is completely different from any previous types of games I’ve taken part in. In this competition, we truly feel that we are doing business to make money.

ASDAN is an economic-related competition, which is full of uncertainty with multiple business and mathematical variables. A lot of preparation is required before the competition, such as setting up a company, choosing the company name, designing logos and slogans, designing products, doing a road show PPT, writing speeches, making posters, etc. The two-day offline competition is very intense, with four rounds of commercial auctions and business decisions, and two rounds of road shows. In one round, the assignment was given on the first night and the work needs presenting the next morning. Time is tight, it’s very challenging.

Mark Sun:

Q

During the two-day competition, what was the most challenging part for you? How did you and your team overcome this hurdle?

Joyce Liu:

During my first ASDAN competition, there was a house-making game, which I thought was very challenging and interesting.

The game is conducted online. The most challenging part for me was making decisions which could lead to a straight loss. However, we compared our notes and data, found the clues and finally made right decisions.

Bensen Liu:

Mark Sun:

For me, the biggest challenge was to lead the entire team completing the roadshow. Many of us had stage fright and were not confident in delivering our presentations. In order to overcome this, we wrote a draft for everyone and practiced many times beforehand.

Q

The business competition tests the whole team. In your road show, company strategic planning and other processes, how did you plan and assign roles, and what is the rationale behind it?

Mcqueen Guo:

Role assignment is a major problem in a workplace management. In the competition, we divided the work according to our areas of expertise. The CEO was handed over to those who can make decisions and are good at speaking. The balance sheet was entrusted to the thorough and mathematical mind. The PPT was then put in the hands of our computer-wiz and copy writer.

In the specific assignment process, full consideration was given to the hobbies and advantages of every team member. Only in this way can everyone's enthusiasm be stimulated to the greatest extent, so that everyone can take up their favorite and best-fit responsibilities.

Mark Sun:

Q

Have you got any impressive stories from the preparation and during the game itself?

I remember in one of the games, everyone was very anxious as there would be a road show next morning yet our PPT had not been completed. So our entire team stayed up, discussed and worked until very late. On the way to the venue next morning, we completed the PPT content just in time. After a day of competition, everyone was exhausted, but very excited. No one was backing off due to fatigue. As a team, we had to bear the responsibility in order to reap the honor.

Mcqueen Guo:

Q

What changes and gains has the competition brought to you?

Bensen Liu:

The changes brought about were mainly a boost in our confidence, and second a strengthening of teamwork skills.

It gave us a deeper understanding of what a team is. Unity is the most important factor in a team. We have also learned how to do business and how to practice moderation. It is quoted that money comes from danger. But we must ensure that we can afford the risk in a worst-case scenario.

Mcqueen Guo:

Mark Sun:

It gave us a better understanding of the current economic environment, as well as the various aspects of a company's structure and operation. It also told us a very important truth that in order to succeed you must work rigorously and examine tasks carefully. It is a CEO’s remit to discover everyone's strengths and employ them reasonably in this game. Cooperation is very important. When making decisions, one needs to be cautious, considering of both short-term and long-term goals.

Q

With the current epidemic situation, many industries (especially service industries such as catering and tourism) have been hit hard. Should your company be faced with the same crisis at this moment, how would you solve or alleviate the crisis?

Mcqueen Guo:

Role assignment is a major problem in a workplace management. In the competition, we divided the work according to our areas of expertise. The CEO was handed over to those who can make decisions and are good at speaking. The balance sheet was entrusted to the thorough and mathematical mind. The PPT was then put in the hands of our computer-wiz and copy writer.

The running of a business can be temporarily suspended, or the company can be developed in other directions (the core business direction remains unchanged). For example: catering can be changed to online food seed sowing, when brought to harvest food could then be delivered to homes (simulating online farms, make money out of customer flow). Tourism and other service industries can run online tour programs introducing various countries and provide a charged tour guide service. This could also tap into the first bucket of customer flow.

Joyce Liu:

Mcqueen Guo:

Under appropriate circumstances, some irrelevant staff could be made redundant and core staff remained. Meanwhile, it is suggested to promote cooperation with partners who share common interests and achieve a win-win situation.

When the entity economy was faced with a challenging situation, a combination of online and offline model can be employed, using online shops, Taobao, JD.com and other platforms to keep business running and expand trading channels.

Alice Wang:

Mark Sun:

Role assignment is a major problem in a workplace management. In the competition, we divided the work according to our areas of expertise. The CEO was handed over to those who can make decisions and are good at speaking. The balance sheet was entrusted to the thorough and mathematical mind. The PPT was then put in the hands of our computer-wiz and copy writer.

End of Interview

In order to achieve the best possible results at the road show, the BIBA team polished the presentation with repeated rehearsal and stayed up late to prepare the PPT. Their fluent, creative and confident presentations displayed their company's brand and product design in the best light. They built calculation models with on-site materials, conducted market analysis, formulated operating plans, managed budget control and made the best decisions with limited funds to maximize profits.

Life never forsakes those striving and hard-working souls. In this competition, BIBA juniors showed the spirit of BIBA’s 10As; “Be bold to venture, endeavor to explore, and excel to communicate.” Through sweat and tears, they gave a great example of wonderful team spirit through unity and cooperation. April showers bring May flowers. A broader world stage is set for the juniors to explore. Watch this space!
