New Zealand tells Australia: Stop 'copying' our flag
New Zealand's acting[1]Prime Minister Winston Peters has accused Australia of copying his country's flag, telling its neighbor to get its own design.
[1]acting这里作形容词是“(临时)代理的”意思(someone who does an important job while the usual person is not there, or until a new person is chosen for the job)
acting manager/head teacher/director etc
"We had a flag that we've had for a long time, copied by Australia," Peters told local network TVNZ on Tuesday.
"They (Australia) should actually change their flag and honor the fact that we got there first with this design," added Peters, who is filling in for[2] Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern while she is on maternity leave[3].
[2]fill in for: 暂时代替,临时补缺
Can you fill in for me at the meeting? I can't go, and someone must take my place.

The flags are indeed similar. Both are based on the British ensign, with a dark blue background, a United Kingdom Union Flag in the top left corner and the Southern Cross star constellation[4].
[4]the Southern Cross star constellation

Among the few distinguishing features is that Australia's stars are white, rather than red and the flag also features an extra star with seven points representing the Australian states and territories.
New Zealand's flag was adopted in 1902, five decades before Australia's current flag was officially recognized in 1954. Though various versions of the Australian flag have been used since 1901.
Delicate[5] time in NZ-Australian relations
Peters' comments come at a delicate time in trans-Tasman[6] relations, after the detention of a 17-year-old New Zealander in an adult detention facility in Melbourne[墨尔本], Australia, earlier this month that sparked outrage in New Zealand's capital, Wellington[惠灵顿].
[5]delicate (adj.) needing to be dealt with carefully or sensitively in order to avoid problems or failure
There's something I have to speak to you about – it's a delicate matter.
[6]Trans-Tasman is an adjective used primarily in Australia and New Zealand, which signifies an interrelationship between both countries. Its name originates from the Tasman Sea which lies between the two countries.
Trans-Tasman commerce would refer to commerce between these two countries.
Australia has deported hundreds of New Zealanders in recent years, but the incident involving the 17-year-old boy marked a low point in relations between firm allies, according to some analysts.
It's not the first time New Zealand has wrested with its flag design -- in 2016 the country held a referendum over whether to ditch[7] the Union Jack[8] and switch to a silver fern[9] design.
[7]ditch: to stop having something because you no longer want it 扔掉,抛弃,丢弃
The government has ditched plans to privatise the prison.
[8]The Union Jack
[9]A fern is a plant that has long stems with feathery leaves and no flowers. There are many types of fern.
New Zealand voted to stick with the current version -- but only after spending $17.6 million on the referendum.
