The UK-China Infrastructure Alliance was launched during the state visit by President XI to the UK in 2015 to promote closer commercial links and collaboration between the UK and China. The UK-China Infrastructure Academy, one of the Alliance's initiatives, has supported hundreds of Chinese investors in relation to energy and infrastructure investment in the UK over the past five years.

Our next webinar on 12th November will look at onshore and offshore wind investment projects in the UK. Two factors have greatly influenced the growth of these industries, with onshore wind projects benefitting from the upcoming Contracts for Difference (CfD) round in 2021 and offshore wind projects becoming more subsidy-free in Europe. Coincidentally, the Chinese government has also set a 2021 target for phasing out subsidies of new offshore wind farms, so wind projects in both countries will face similar challenges. Join our webinar to learn more about the UK’s experiences and unlock new opportunities to invest into wind projects in the UK.

Our first speaker, Daniel Grosvenor, from Deloitte, will introduce the impact from Net Zero policy and the proposed changes to the CfD scheme, with the wind project economics and recent transactions. Our second presentation will be delivered by two experts from DIT—David McIntosh, Head of Offshore Wind, DIT and Karl John, DIT Renewable Energy Specialist—who will present opportunities for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the UK and opportunities for new entrants to the market. Our third, and final, speaker is from Equinor, who will speak on their commercial expertise, global development, and significant UK experience as the operator of the Sheringham Shoal, Dudgeon and Hywind Scotland offshore wind farms.

He is actively involved in the retail energy supply, energy technology, offshore wind and flexible power sectors.

Karl is a Specialist within the Department for International Trade’s Renewable Energy team. Prior to joining HMG Karl was the Vice President for Vestas Offshore UK and Country Manager for Areva Wind UK, a mechanical engineer at heart spending 20 years in automotive consultancy (Ricardo) – supporting the diversification into clean tech at Ricardo.

On 29th October, Department for International Trade and the China-Britain Business Council hosted the second of the five webinars on UK-China Infrastructure Academy 2020 webinar series. The second webinar focused on the market of solar and battery storage in the UK, offered detailed market dynamics, with analysis of revenue generating sources and growing points, as well as practical examples from both sectors. It was interesting to see the interaction between the two sectors and the integration of the technologies.

Deloitte’s Director - Logan Kube gave a comprehensive overview of the UK solar PV and battery storage market, including regulation and business models, key trends of the development, and most importantly the market volatility and arbitrage opportunity in the battery storage sector. Shane Swords, Managing Partner of NextEnergy Capital, introduced their NextPower UK ESG Fund (“NPUK ESG”)to invest into unlevered, contracted and unsubsidised solar plants in the UK and their solar asset management team – WiseEnergy, with cases for investment in solar PV. Hope the experiences and support from their team could give some inspiration to the audience.

Our last speaker, Mark Christensen, Director from Reliagen, used the example of strategic electric vehicle (EV) charging super-hub infrastructure site with 50 MW grid scale battery energy storage facility (BESF) for Greater London & Heathrow, introduced the rapid & ultra-rapid charging service station for commercial EV vans and taxis fleets. The followed Q&A session was super busy, we even extended our webinar to let all questions be fully discussed, here are some questions during the webinar:
