Women of Achievement – For grades 6-12

Born into a family of modest means in Chicago, Michelle Obama was inspired to reach her full potential through the example set by her parents, particularly by her father’s courageous battle with multiple sclerosis. After graduating from Chicago public schools, she earned admission to Princeton University and later Harvard Law School – nearly impossible achievements for earlier generations of African American women. While working at a Chicago law firm, she met her future husband, Barack Obama, and the two would go on to make history.

In this detailed biography, readers will learn how Michelle Obama overcame obstacles to achieve success and how her story is influencing other young women today.

The fairytale wedding of Lady Diana Spencer to Prince Charles in 1981 was considered the social event of the century. Called the “People’s Princess,” Diana embodied style, grace, and beauty. But the fairytale marriage was short-lived. She struggled privately with her weight and publicly with the separation and eventual divorce from Charles. Killed in a car crash in Paris in 1997, Diana left a legacy of goodwill through her charity work and her sons.

This is an inside look at this beloved icon’s remarkable, dramatic life. It tells the story of a woman who overcame personal turmoil to make considerable and lasting contributions to the world at large.

We hope your children will enjoy the above selections. Happy International Women’s Day tomorrow…and Happy Reading!
