President Trump spoke to the nation from the White House earlier this morning. He called this weekend's mass shootings barbaric slaughters. And he blamed a number of factors for the violence - mental health, video games, the Internet writ large.

He talked about hatred. But he quickly pivoted to what he called the perils of the Internet. He returned repeatedly to mental illness as a factor. And he focused on video games and what he called the glorification of violence. He stopped short of specific policies or prescriptions to address this. But he did issue something of a warning to social media companies.

Trump mentioned the alleged El Paso’s shooter’s reported manifesto, which the president said was “consumed by racist hate.” He then called on the nation to condemn racism and white supremacy, while not acknowledging his role in promoting those ideas.

Trump directed social media companies “to develop tools to identify mass shooters before they strike.”

“The perils of the internet and social media cannot be ignored, and will not be ignored,” said Trump, who regularly promotes hate speech on his Twitter feed.

但也有人为特朗普辩护：

请告诉我控制枪支如何阻止这些枪击事件。从我所读到的内容来看，这两个精神错乱的人不管怎样都会通过任何一种正在提议的背景调查。

更有意思的是，在这种严肃沉重的场合，特朗普居然把枪击案的发生地点说错了。

President Donald Trump incorrectly identified the Ohio city where a gunman opened fire early Sunday morning, mistakenly referencing Toledo rather than the city of Dayton during his official remarks on Monday morning.

美国总统唐纳德·特朗普把周日凌晨枪手开枪的俄亥俄州城市讲错了。在周一早上的官方讲话中，他错说成托莱多，而不是代顿市。

“May God bless the memory of those who perished in Toledo. May God protect them,” Trump said from the White House. “May God protect all of those from Texas to Ohio. May God bless the victims and their families.”
