Director's Welcome

Director’s Welcome
Dear Dulwich International High School Suzhou Students,
It is a pleasure to welcome you back to school for the 2018-19 academic year. We hope you have had some time to rest and relax over the summer break and have come back to face the new year with energy and optimism.
This is the school’s seventh year and we look forward to building further on the excellent foundations laid in the school’s first six years. To ensure this happens we spent the last 5 months reviewing our school vision and coming up with a statement that we think best defines what drives our school. After consultation with the school community at large we decided on:
Grow in Dulwich, Thrive in Life
Through developing, knowing, and caring foreach individual, we enable young people to thrive at university and beyond, sothat they make a positive difference in the world
First and foremost, we want our school to be a place where you are known, accepted, feel a part of and, happy to be at. We want our school to be a place where you are proud to attend. We want our school to be a place where your potential is fully developed, not just academically, but culturally, linguistically, and holistically, so that you not only make it into your university of best fit, but you succeed when you get there. We then want you to leave university and go on to have a positive impact on the world.
One of the more notable changes you will see this year, is that Co-curricular activities are now compulsory. We set high standards of participation for all members of our family and expect everyone to get involved and play an active role in school life. What you get out of your time in school is largely determined by what you put into it and you should make the best possible use of the opportunities on offer to develop your interests and skills both inside and outside the classroom. It is also becoming increasingly clear that if you are to access the world’s leading universities, then a highly developed Co-curricular portfolio is essential. To this end, all students must now be involved in two CCA activities per week.
Developing our students’ English language and Englishspeaking skills continues to be a key focus in our school. With all lessons conducted in English by our fully English-speaking staff, I hope you take every opportunity to practise and develop your skills so that you have a strong level of English, not just for the university application process, but for when you eventually go abroad to study. We will continue this year with our ‘English only Fridays’ and we expect all students to adhere to the rules for this initiative.
You will also see a sharper focus this year on our clearly defined values and aims for all students. Our values define what we expect from all members of our school community and as these are taught through your individual subject classes, in Lifeskills and tutor time, I hope you take onboard what these values mean and use them as a means to not only guiding your time in school, but in developing you as young people. As you know, we set high expectations for behaviour in our school and when these expectations are not met, we will be using the values to guide discussions around our expectations.
I am looking forward to a great year with our entire school community and I hope the year will be a productive one for you filled with many positive experiences, both inside and outside the classroom.
Best wishes for a wonderful start to the year,
Campbell Douglas
