很抱歉在上博把玩国宝之后这么久才写信！
这次复旦大学中英诗歌交流项目，很精彩很成功，不过也把我累坏了。两场复旦活动，加一个上海大学的小型中英文学节，和一个周末的扬州诗歌雅集，从项目观念的设计，到具体实施，核心的考虑是要在本土深度的地基上，构成国际思想交流，或曰：专业性基础上的思想性。这个构思，应当说完成得相当好。
不过，整个两星期活动的“垫底”项目，就是第一天参观上博：在良渚玉器部分看玉琮，在地下花园看青铜饕餮，让英国诗人获得了感性印象，从而使他们翻译我的《一条良渚玉琮上的线》和《饕餮之问》成为可能。这是我故意为加深项目深度，给他们出的难题——在诗作背后，加上“文化”层次，历史在这里，犹如古诗的用典，逼着老外们学习了一些本来无需涉足的中国上古史哈哈。
现在，这两首诗已经翻译好了，我先把《一条良渚玉琮上的线》中英文，以及我和译者乔治塞尔特斯的简历发给你，记得你说可以把这首诗转给良渚博物馆，那就太好了！也算吾等用诗歌为历史做了一次深度表达。
对老外们来说，这首诗最难理解的，是作为一个宇宙模型的玉琮。那条精美无比的线，与其说刻在玉上，不如说刻在（想象中的）宇宙上！这是上次我们说过的，把握际根兄对饕餮象征意义提问的核心——良渚玉琮上的神面，延伸成青铜饕餮，都是宇宙之神凸入人间的显形！更引申一步，就是我这里的归结：“一条线绘成第一个字”（请注意前后两次使用“绘成——磨灭”、“磨灭——绘成”）。从良渚玉器到文字出现，其间近两千年，从图形延伸为文字的发明创始。这也是我对文字起源的一个小小猜测。
语言正是从现实圆满绝决处起始，超越到另一个层次：“行到（人生）水穷处，坐看（文字）云起时”是也。
这首诗形式讲究：一七辙、言前辙交错使用，两行五音步和两行四音步也交换递进，最终首尾相接，同样拥有宇宙模式的完整。“手伸进形状”——一代代人在这（命运的）“形状”里消失。
英译者乔治赛特斯很棒，把译文也“建筑”成了韵文，算是应了一战！好啊。

杨炼与英国诗人GeorgeSzirtes互译小记（杨炼）
乔治和我相遇于一次语言较量。在几经周折，终于选定他参与我设计的复旦大学中英诗歌交流项目之后，我对这位匈牙利出生、八岁移居英国、却以英语诗获得了艾略特诗歌奖的“杂交”诗人充满了好奇。我的理论是，没有比翻译几首诗更好的了解一位诗人的方法了。恰巧，他任教的英国东安格利亚大学邀请我和他一起朗诵，我写信给他后，他立刻寄了几首诗来，我一看，当头那首《水》，形式就严格得不得了：十四行商籁体，分为八行六行两节，全押韵，韵脚设计为ABBAABBA CBDCBD，节奏设计为第一节每行五顿，第二节每行六顿。好家伙，这是挑战呀！作为应战，我译文的韵脚节奏设计，甚至比原作还严格，并加上了节奏的划分线，让他也能一目了然。这首诗和另一首《疯人院》（其中我把他英诗里的一句德文，翻译成了日本鬼子的“强壮大大的！”），堪称创造性翻译，朗诵效果好极了。这还不算，到了复旦，作为“报复”，我又请他翻译我的《一条良渚玉琮上的线》，同样一首韵脚、节奏设计分明的诗，且通过远古指涉当下，这条线，精美无比地镂刻在“宇宙”上，同时具体和抽象之极！乔治的应战也精彩，押韵玲珑，节奏悦耳。我们的第一回合，成了复旦大学交流项目的最佳开端。乔治的诗，在英国广受尊重。从一九七九年《倾斜的门》获得费伯纪念奖起，他几乎每一本作品，都获得或被提名著名奖项。他同时是翻译家，散文作家，出版家，英国皇家文学院院士。复旦大学项目，是他第一次来中国，这个项目的诗人互译、内部对话、公众朗诵，层次清晰，结构完整，特别是我们步唐代诗人之后尘，到扬州举行国际诗歌雅集，更令他感受到古典、当代中文诗歌间的强有力互动。在复旦的最后一场活动，以用中、英文朗诵清朝人汪沆命名瘦西湖的七绝《红桥秋禊辞》作结，其中内涵的对话层次，贯穿中国古典（原作）、中文当代（阐释）、英语当代（初译）、英语古典（定稿），我希望，乔治对诗歌形式的追求，终于在应和中文古诗的极端形式感时，获得了满足。
