Since last week, most international schools in Beijing began implementing various ways to teach their students, despite them not being in the classroom. Some schools are using online programs such as Zoom, while others are simply using WeChat. Here are some updates on how a few of these international schools have been able to continue their classes online.

Canadian International School of Beijing (CISB)

Canadian International School of Beijing (CISB) sent out a WeChat message with screenshots of email from Head of School/Superintendent Douglas K. Prescott. CISB has delayed reopening date and maintained close communication with students and parents. Teachers actively participate in online learning programs across multiple time zones by online collaboration.

CISB teachers work with the leadership team to explore innovative, fun, and effective ways to meet students’ learning needs.

House of Knowledge (HoK)

Last week, House of Knowledge started their online learning program. Teachers have transformed their homes into small classrooms for class recording. Likewise, some have used sitcoms for teaching, along with children’s favorite story-reading, literacy, singing, crafts, and question-and-answer sessions.

In an origami class, students not only learned about the various planets, they also improved their hand crafting skills. In the end, they also made a small crown for themselves with the leftover paper. In German class, students explored the underwater world with their teacher, learned about different kinds of coral and fish, and practiced German songs with music at home.

Springboard International Bilingual School (SIBS)

Since last year, Springboard International Bilingual School (SIBS) has been advocating “data-driven teaching” and purchasing software such as Microsoft, enterprise WeChat, Managebac, and BrainPop for teaching.

In order to fight against the epidemic and conform to the trend of the information age, SIBS officially started online teaching on Feb 3, providing a variety of online courses for all students. According to the feedback of questionnaires collected so far, students’ overall satisfaction with learning results and other indicators is between 3.8 and 4.1(full score is 5.0).

New Oriental Academy (NOA)

New Oriental Academy (NOA) began online interactive teaching on Feb 3, using the Roombox webcast app. Many foreign teachers located around the world have overcome their jet lag and language difficulties, and are actively participating in online learning programs across multiple time zones via online collaboration.

Live webcast lectures are held half a day in the morning, and in the afternoon, students are encouraged to develop personalized independent learning plans, consolidate review, and answer questions individually.

Daystar Academy

How can young children in kindergarten learn online? They are unfamiliar with computers and cannot use digital devices for long periods of time. What is their online learning like?

Starting on Monday, students of CASA class moved the “work” from the classroom to their home, allowing parents to see how they had grown up in the course. “The teacher wakes everyone up in the WeChat group every day, and then plays music of the day to cheer up the sleepy kids so they can start the day more smoothly and happily,” Kindergarten Director Li Shu said.

Students can choose any of their favorite task to complete for the day, such as handcrafting, hand writing practice, playing games, or learning to do household chores.
