The Western Academy of Beijiing (WAB) Elementary students had the chance to visit the High School science laboratories last December to enjoy a different kind of lesson.
High School science students use microscopes and other lab equipment to create age-appropriate, hands-on experiments and lessons related to DNA for the younger students.
Grade 4 teacher Heather Densley was excited to take her students to the High School.
"Moving the environment changes their attitude toward learning," she said. "To see what they have learned and to see what they are now teaching to the ES students, it's so empowering and inspiring for them because they think, 'This is what I am going to learn, and this is what I'm going to be able to do.'"
While it was an impactful and exciting experience for the Grade 4 students, the High School students also took away a lot of valuable lessons from the activity.
"It's one thing to just learn in a normal classroom and understand things for a test," said Daniel, a Grade 11 student. "But when you have to bring it down and explain it in simple concepts to a fourth grader, it forces you to understand it at a deeper level than you would have otherwise."
