Whether you’re new to sustainable living, or a seasoned eco warrior, we’re here to help you on your journey to Going Green in Beijing. Every week, we bring you China-centric eco-friendly news and tips on Sustainability Sunday!
In this edition of Sustainability Sunday, we’re introducing what we hope and believe should become a household name in Beijing – The Bulk House. Founded in 2017 by Carrie Yu and Joe Harvey, The Bulk House is the first social enterprise in China committed to promoting the zero waste lifestyle. Now nestled in the heart of Beiluguoxiang Hutong in Dongcheng District, The Bulk House offers in-store refills for detergents and shampoo, as well as eco-friendly products that support a zero-waste lifestyle. We toured the shop to discover some pretty interesting finds. Can you guess what the following items are and what they do?

Guess the eco-friendly product and what it does!
Forget those lint removers that rely on sticky plastic sheets you constantly have to refill. This is a lint remover for life! Made from wood and metal, the tightly wound copper coil catches little lint particles from clothes, couches, and other fabric surfaces. Then simply pull off the lint and throw it in the kitchen waste bin!
In the bathroom…
This is silk dental floss in a nifty little glass bottle, to forever replace the plastic containers of plastic floss you might have been using (if you had even remembered to floss, in which case, good for you). When you run out of floss, it’s easy to pick up a new tube of the eco-friendly stuff, which comes wrapped in brown paper if you need it shipped.
Some of us who attended educational institutes that enforced oral hygiene etiquette after recess might remember these, the Metal Tongue Scraper. It isn’t quite as rough as it sounds, and is oddly satisfying to use as it clears your tongue of all the nasty buildup! This one is made entirely of metal, which doesn’t promote bacteria growth and makes it super easy to recycle if you ever needed to. Those little extended legs can also be twisted off so it fits right into your travel toiletries pouch.
This one will be a boon to all long-haired people – a comb/brush cleaner that gets rid of all the collected strands of hair in your hairbrush. As an added bonus, Joe also swears by its therapeutic powers every morning when he clears Carrie’s hairs from their hairbrush (yes, they share one).
And I’m willing to bet you’ll never guess what this one is…
This, my friends, is the world’s first biodegradable bullet. In case you aren’t aware, the bullet is a mini vibrator. So there ya go!
Everything sold at The Bulk House has been meticulously curated by the founding couple, who set the zero-waste example by using all of the products themselves. Next week in Sustainability Sunday, we meet the couple and find out the story behind their journey to going green in Beijing.
