AISB-Hope's Students Take Action to Protect OUR Planet

Earth Day is an annual event that takes place on April 22 to raise awareness for issues that affect our environment. It’s celebrated globally in more than 193 countries and this year’s theme is “Invest in Our Planet.”
For this year’s Earth Day, the students at AISB-Hope International came up with a series of environmentally friendly initiatives throughout the preceding week aimed at helping raise money for a local non-profit environmental group and to increase awareness about the effects of our actions on this planet.
Per Josiah Whitney and Evelyn Kim, 9th grade Biology students - "Our actions can influence the entire planet. All it takes is one person, one step at a time. If we can convince everyone to take one beginning step, our job is already done."
Whether you’re a student at AISB-Hope International, their week-long initiative is something that we can all take part in.

No Meat Monday
AISB-Hope International presented its students and staff with healthier lifestyle choices that are also beneficial to the environment by making Monday’s lunch a vegetarian one. They took this opportunity to present information to its school community as to why the production meat is harmful for the environment.
Here’s How You Can Join In
Consciously make at least one meal today a vegetarian one.
✦
Lights Out Tuesday
AISB-Hope International wants to draw focus on excess electricity usage and how all of us can help conserve energy. Saving electricity can reduce emissions of greenhouse gasses and save money for the school. The students provided examples of how to save electricity when it isn’t required through different presentations and announcements as well as reminding teachers to turn off lights when not needed.

Turn off your electronics when you’re not using them. Or take it one step further and turn Tuesday night into a candle lit evening.
✦
Water Only Wednesday
The school took sugary drinks (i.e., soft drinks, sweet tea, etc.) out of the café to encourage the students and staff to drink only water for this day. The students also presented the benefits of drinking more water and how sugary drinks are detrimental to your health and the environment.
Here’s How You Can Join In
Forego your morning cup of coffee and challenge yourself to a day of detoxing. Fill your reusable bottle of water and carry it around all day. It’s good for the environment and your health.
✦
Recycling Thursday
AISB-Hope International raised awareness of the damage to our planet with the excess usage of everything and one important method to help – recycling. The students provided information to help everyone make wiser choices to recycle instead of simply throwing everything into the trash bins.
Here’s How You Can Join In
Forego the waimai that’s always delivered in single-use plastic and opt to go grocery shopping with your own bags. Or, if you know you’ll be getting your daily coffee, bring your own bottle instead of using their single-use one.

Clean-Up Friday
To educate the staff and students on the issues of waste, students at AISB-Hope International organized classes to help clean the local ecosystem. The students went around the schoolyard and surrounding areas near the school and picked up trash. (Additionally, the secondary students spent 30 minutes picking up trash while on a field trip to the Qianmen area.) They set an example for keeping their school and its’ grounds clean as well as presented information to the school community about the effects that trash, and littering has on our planet.
Here’s How You Can Join In
Organize a Plogging* group this weekend with some friends. Cleaning up trash together is actually a lot more fun than you’d expect!

7th Grade Life Science student Elijah Whitney believes that Earth Day is an important celebration so that we can raise awareness of actions necessary by all of us to save the planet. “As technology advances, so does the means to destroy the environment. If we do not take steps to protect the environment, we will destroy it.”
Throughout the week, the students sold baked goods in the café to raise money for a local environmental organization. As part of their class work, the students will be taught about research methods to determine the best non-profit for which to donate the money.
