WAB Students Making a Difference with the PYP Exhibition

Grade 5 is an exciting time for students. Not only is it their last year in Elementary School before making the big leap to Middle School, but it’s also the year where they get to show off their learning in the PYP Exhibition, or PYPX. This is where they put their understanding of the PYP key concepts and learner profile attributes on full display for all to see.
The WAB Podcast
While the PYPX is typically on display for five days, the process leading up to the big day is much longer. In this week’s WAB Podcast, three Grade 5 students – Becca, Hamish and Ellie – together with their Grade Level Learning Leader Steven Kay, unpack the seven-week process and the comprehensive steps involved.
The PYPX is an interdisciplinary project that inspires students to take action and make a positive impact in their communities and the world. Through a mix of collaboration, creativity, and research, students connect their learning to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, tackling issues such as equality, climate change, and responsible consumption.
"I think PYPX is all about learning how to take action for the planet, telling people how to do that and helping people understand that our planet is important and we need to take care of it,” said Becca.
During the seven-week process, students are mixed and matched with students from other homerooms based on their interests, allowing them to make new friends and experience fresh teaching approaches.
"I'm quite new to WAB and I thought I only really knew my homeroom quite well because when I arrived the PYPX had just started. I thought it was quite cool to get to know a whole other classroom and it was cool to experience the different teachers and their different ways of teaching,” said Hamish.
Once the students have explored their lines of inquiry and completed their research with the help of mentors and experts, it's time for them to put their creative hats on and start brainstorming ideas for presenting their final projects. In collaboration with the school’s art and design team, the students find creative and visual ways to present their ideas, using any format of their choosing.
"They had complete agency over the variety of artworks they were able to do and sometimes that's pretty tough for a teacher to let them have complete agency. But with all the systems we put in place and with all the support we had from the school, they were able to pretty much do anything they wanted to, to present their exhibition. That was a big success that I was really proud of,” Steven noted.
The final highlight of the PYPX was the opportunity to share their exhibition with a broader audience including parents, peers, and other schools, extending the impact of their work beyond the walls of WAB and inspiring others to make a positive change in the world.
