WATCH: Foreigners sing along to Shanghai’s anti-fireworks anthem

Shanghai is once again imposing a city-wide ban on fireworks this Spring Festival and to make sure that people know about, they are releasing a remix version of last year’s smash hit “Don’t Set Off, Don’t Set Off” (不放不放).

The musical PSA, set to the tune of “Dragostea Din Tei” — more popularly known as “The Numa Numa Song” — features police and community safety volunteers singing the chorus, which reminds Shanghai residents not to set off any fireworks for Chinese New Year.

This year’s version, “Don’t Set Off, Don’t Set Off 2,” also includes sections in which officers and residents rap in the local dialect lyrics like: “Electric fireworks are lively enough, the noise is loud and clear and they are better for the environment.”

But the stars of this year’s music video are undoubtedly a trio of foreigners, recruited from a local English language school. According to Shine, Shanghai police are trying to reach out to foreigners more this year about the fireworks ban, and apparently this was the way they thought of doing it.

In 2016, Shanghai began cracking down hard on the centuries-old tradition of ringing in the Chinese New Year with a cacophony of fireworks that have been known to burn down 5-star hotels and shroud cities in a toxic layer of festive smog.

Last year, some 50,000 police officers and volunteers patrolled downtown Shanghai looking for revelers violating the ban who could be hit with a 500 yuan fine and have their names put on a credit blacklist.

Afterward, Shanghai police announced the tremendous success of this effort, boasting that the use of fireworks and firecrackers had dropped to zero in downtown Shanghai within the first ring road.
