Welcome to Gossip Fodder, where we babble on about new restaurants, cafes, and bars in Shanghai. This month: Comma, Pierogi Ladies, Momenti, and Umi.

Comma

Shaving in the Dark event at Comma.

Comma is new bar on Xinle Road with the vibe of a trendy Japanese izakaya. They have a number of house cocktails (¥50 to ¥65) with Japanese ingredients – shochu, sake, shiso leaf – which are on tap, and they make their own booze blends from whisky to sake. Food-wise, they have lunch sets such as veggie okonomiyaki and pork tonkatsu, and dinner is more extensive with sashimi, yakitori, main dishes, and sides. They also have an old school video game machine and host various game nights such as beer pong and Magic The Gathering.

Umi Restaurant & Terrace

Chirashi bowl at Umi.

Umi is an upscale Japanese restaurant in Taikoo Hui Mall serving contemporary takes on Japanese food. Helmed by German chef Bjoern Alexander, they do five-, six- and eight-course omakase menus, as well as sharing dishes such as mussels and rice bowls. There’s a long sake menu and cocktails have a distinct Nippon vibe, and they do promotions like a bingo lunch where you can win a free set. They currently have a special deal where you can get their five-course meal for ¥398 on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

Pierogi Ladies

The signature at Pierogi Ladies, but they have a bigger menu now.

Polish dumpling restaurant Pierogi Ladies have been around for awhile, starting as a booth at Jiashan Market (which they still do occasionally) to sharing a space with the former bar That One Place. They now have their own store on Jiaozhou Road, and they expanded the menu to include cold cuts, blood sausage with pickles, Polish style grilled sandwiches, and pies. There’s also an extensive collection of vodkas, from foreign brands to their own infusions of bacon, pickle and dill, rosemary, almond, and bison grass. Hungover on the weekends? They have you covered with this brunch set (¥98) that includes six sauerkraut and mushroom pierogis, sausage, eggs, either a slice of pickle, pickle juice, or lemonade, and a shot of vodka.

Momenti

Spaghetti Momenti with creamy lemon sauce, fresh burrata, and coffee (¥128).

Momenti is an Italian bistro in Xintiandi that’s meant to be a cafe by day and bar by night. There’s an emphasis on coffee here, especially caffeinated cocktails such as the Momenti Old Fashioned, Moka Martini, and Frozen Irish Coffee. Those drinks are meant to be paired with food, and they have dishes from a range of spaghettis, which they import from a small producer in Naples as well as make fresh, to mackerel with Thai green curry and parmesan ice cream.
