Jiangnan Hou)

The Exhibition of Annual of Contemporary Art of China (Shanghai) 2023 will be held at the Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art from 16th August to 7th October 2024. This is an event that annually documents, reviews, and displays the current state of Chinese art through a combination of documents and artworks. This marks the fifth time the annual exhibition has taken place in Shanghai.
Chinese contemporary art has its unique cultural origin, distinct from that of the West. China is one of the few cultures in the world today that can naturally connect with the cultures of the Axial Age (800 BCE–200 BCE) in China, Greece, Hebrew, and India. Diversity and inclusiveness are also reflected in Chinese art. Since 1986, we have established the China Modern Art Archive (CMAA) to continuously document the latest creations and contributions to the art field in China. Contemporary art cannot rely on importation or imitation; only original art is recognized by art history. Like contemporary art worldwide, the achievements of Chinese contemporary art are currently being deeply inspired, impacted, and created by ever-evolving AI and digital technologies.
This annual exhibition is a review and display of the overall state of Chinese contemporary art in 2023. The 2023 volume of the Annual of Contemporary Art of China includes 2611 recorded events (including exhibitions and incidents) and approximately 3113 documents. After careful selection, 100 artists are chosen as representatives. The exhibition categorizes the developments and issues of the past year into five art forms (photography, video, digital art, ecological art, and archival art), two theoretical topics (art criticism and postcolonialism), and one artistic subject (artistic organizations). The exhibition comprehensively presents the research results from the Annual of Contemporary Art of China, introduces these outstanding artists' achievements, and showcases original works from 11 artists, including Cai Yaling, Chen Dandizi, Chen Chieh-jen, Fan Xi, Han Qian, He Zike, Hu Yun, Shen Shaomin, Zhang Donghui, Zhang Xinjun, and Zheng Yuan, as well as the works from 89 other artists.
From the 2023 volume of the Annual of Contemporary Art of China, we can see that this year has brought many new aspects and discussions to Chinese contemporary art, building on the existing foundation, and new methods of art creation continue to emerge. While it remains uncertain to what extent these new ideas will influence the methods of Chinese contemporary art, it at least signifies that Chinese contemporary art is not stagnant. As last year, the influence on art forms and criticism brought by media transformation and issues because of digital technology, the theoretical frontiers suggested by archives and ecology, and the continued influence of postcolonialism all contribute to the new directions and vitality of Chinese contemporary art.
