Archiving and Activating:
Archival Materials and Asia’s Architectural Past and Future
Architecture Internationalization Demonstration School, Southeast University
Asian Architectural Archive Center, Southeast University
27-28 August, 2022, Beijing Time
In-Person and Online (ZOOM)
Venue: Asian Architectural Archive Center (SEU Si-Pai-Lou Campus)
Architectural materials, surrogates for human memory and carriers of human culture, are preserved to enable current and future scholarly research and educational projects. In view of this, Southeast University will invite top scholars in the field of architecture, arts and humanities, and professionals in library and archive leadership, to hold an international symposium of the meaning, function, and future prospects of archives and libraries in educational institutions and their role in Asian architecture development.
The Archive aims to rescue, preserve, and make accessible documents that are important in Asia’s rich and diverse cultural and intellectual patrimony, serving the purpose of increasing and sharing knowledge in architecture and related fields, and advance scholarly research in architectural history and theory. Thus, the Archive will also function as a research facility. Asia has a unique and rich history and reality, but the collection, preservation, and accessibility of historical documents and materials are far from adequate. There is a scarcity in professional institutions that engage in the collection, preservation, and exhibition of modern architectural materials, let alone in-depth archival research.
1) The meaning, function, and future prospects of archives and libraries in educational institutions;
2) The special role of archives in architecture and related fields to the development of Asian architecture.
1) The role of historical materials in architecture and related fields in creating better futures;
2) The challenges and opportunities of archiving materials specific to architecture, landscape architecture and urban design;
3) The prospects for a specifically Asian archive, rescuing, collecting, and making available documents of significance for China and nearby countries.
It’s a two-day event, on August 27th and 28th (Saturday and Sunday), 2022.
