Conclusion

Taking A-share companies listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges during the period 2012-2018 as a research sample, in this study the authors investigated the influence of entrepreneurs’ geographic and academic relationships on corporate innovation. The results indicated that, after controlling for other influencing factors, entrepreneurs’ geographic relationships had a significant positive effect on corporate innovation. Furthermore, entrepreneurs with a strong ability endowment exerted an especially strong positive effect on corporate innovation through their geographic and academic relationships. This finding indicated that the information and other social capital accumulated by entrepreneurs in their native place can help their enterprises obtain the unique resources needed for innovation. Moreover, the greater an entrepreneur’s ability endowment, the more able they are to transform these resources into the drivers of corporate innovation, which will boost their enterprise’s innovation ability. Entrepreneurs’ academic relationships also had a significant positive effect on corporate innovation, such that the stronger an entrepreneur’s ability endowment, the greater the promoting effect their academic relationships had on corporate innovation. This finding suggested that entrepreneurs may take advantage of their accumulated professional knowledge and their universities’ research platforms to enhance their enterprises’ innovation capabilities. Entrepreneurs with a strong ability endowment can help their enterprises derive maximal benefit from research resources of this type and can better transform R&D results into a competitive advantage. The higher the prestige level of the college from which an entrepreneur graduated, the greater the promoting effect of the entrepreneur’s academic relationships on corporate innovation. This result implied that the higher the prestige level of an entrepreneur’s university, the greater the likelihood that the entrepreneur can obtain research platforms and support; furthermore, attending a high-level university will also facilitate industry-academic collaboration. Further investigation also revealed that, when an enterprise faces an unfavorable external environment, entrepreneurs can rely on the relational capital they have accumulated through their geographic and academic relationships to exert an even greater positive influence on corporate innovation. This finding implied that the informal institutional systems entrepreneurs establish through their social networks can compensate for the inadequacies of formal institutional systems and facilitate better corporate development.

Management Insights

The following insights can be gleaned from the research the authors presented in this paper. First, entrepreneurs should make full use of their geographic and academic relationships to obtain the resources needed for corporate innovation. This action will enable them to enhance their enterprises’ innovation ability and help improve core competitiveness. Second, entrepreneurs’ ability endowment and qualities will affect their corporate innovation decisions. Consequently, when selecting a management team, considering aspects such as entrepreneurs’ academic attainment, professional background, and work experience will enhance team quality and provide the talent needed to support corporate innovation. Furthermore, when seeking employment or launching a startup, entrepreneurs should consider locating in their native place or where they attended college and making the maximal use of the social networks and knowledge resources they can obtain in these places. Moreover, while making the best use of their own talents, entrepreneurs should also seek to boost their negotiating power in the labor market, which they can use to increase their professional experience. In the case of government, to provide a favorable external market environment that facilitates enterprises’ development, local governments should place greater emphasis on improving the external environment. If governments can create an effective competition environment, enterprises will strive to adapt to that environment, adjust their innovation strategies in accordance with external market conditions, and carefully nurture their competitive advantages.

Research Limitations and Prospects

Although the authors conducted an in-depth study on the impact of entrepreneur relationship capital on enterprise innovation, this paper still has the following limitations. First, although the authors studied the impact of entrepreneur relationship capital on enterprise innovation from the perspective of entrepreneurs’ geographical relationship and academic relationship, entrepreneur relationship capital is not limited to this, but may also include entrepreneur blood relationship and business relationship, for example, future research can explore the impact of entrepreneur blood relationship and business relationship and other relationship capital on enterprise innovation. Secondly, in this paper the authors only discussed the impact of entrepreneur relationship capital on enterprise innovation from the perspective of innovation input; thus, future research can analyze the impact of entrepreneur relationship capital on enterprise innovation from the perspective of innovation output. Finally, in this research the authors used second-hand data to measure entrepreneurs’ geographical relationship and academic relationship; thus, in the future, first-hand data can be obtained by a questionnaire survey and interviews, for example, to measure entrepreneurs’ relationship capital.
