Homework Buddies at YCIS Beijing

2016-02-19 YCIS Beijing YCISBeijing

Primary School parents sometimes find it difficult to encourage their children   to complete their homework, whether it's struggling to find the time or just being unsure of how to help. To help relieve some of that pressure, a group of compassionate Secondary School students at YCIS Beijing volunteer their afternoons to become "homework buddies" for our young learners. This unique programme has had a visibly positive impact for everyone involved.

Primary School students receive targeted help with their homework while also building positive relationships, gaining confidence, and learning the value of a job well done. Additionally, thanks to the varied nationalities of the Secondary School volunteers, multilingual support is offered in English, Korean, and Chinese, further increasing their language abilities.

For our Secondary School volunteers, developing a deeper sense of responsibility and commitment to their community not only builds their confidence and self-esteem, but also provides them with the opportunity to reflect on their own studies. Additionally, Years 10 and 11 students' contribution of time counts as a service activity in their YCIS challenge while the Years 12 and 13 students can use this activity to work towards fulfilling their CAS requirements.
