Howie Lee - Event, Fact and Those which are emphasized

One of China’s most cutting-edge electronic producers Howie Lee is back - leaning into a more gentle neoclassical mode on his latest wonder Event, Fact and Those which are emphasized. Compared to the artist’s previous work which was chock full of mythology-rich, dystopian-frenzied, and sino-futurist soundscapes, his latest finds the artist decompressing to some degree, allowing its traditional, albeit deconstructed, elements to guide listeners into its wayward tapestry, with its electronic elements weaving in and out with playful resurgence. It may not have the narrative or conceptual thrust of his previous work, but there is no denying the sonic majesty of the visionary producer.

Shen Zhi 沈帜 - shenzhi live at xiamen

Zhejiang native Shen Zhi - known for his work in bands such as Railway Suicide Train and YePeng - dips into his experimental tendencies on the tape release shenzhi live at xiamen. Recorded back in the summer of 2021 at RealLive & Books in the coastal city, the improvisational solo performance consists of three ‘sketches’ involving the layering, punch modulating and looping of the fiddle and a synthesizer. As one might expect from its looping framework - these are soundscapes that grow larger and at times more dissonant with every passing second - engulfing listeners in its classical (Gothic and Celtic) undertones and walls of sounds. And for those familiar enough, you can hear some of the ideas that would later be fleshed out in the music of Shen Zhi’s other projects.
