Stopped by Yuyintang Park last Friday to check out two touring bands with some serious chops. Hailing from Suzhou, Yinmachi 饮马池 have shed almost all remnants of their ska rock days, and instead, have dived headfirst into the high-wire world of the post punk world, injecting their sound with propulsive allure, chugging guitars, and infection.

They’ve grown leaps and bounds over the past year - just a really well-rounded sound that’s carried by taut instrumentation and musicians who know their shit (and pretty much every member gets to sing a track). 

Meanwhile, this was my second time catching Chengdu’s Jade-Breaking Plan For Liberty 唯利玉碎计划. A surly mix of grunge, prog, and blues - this is guitar rock at its wildest (they don’t even have a bass). 

Their whirlwind sound can be a bit much to handle at times, especially when the backing tracks begin to crack the band’s rugged veneer - but there’s no denying the band’s hefty and, dare I say, sexy magnetism.

A fine night for rock and roll indeed.
