There’s strange alchemy going on in Beijing’s Incentive Dry - a fever dream of brooding alt rock, experimental electronica, bookish post punk, theatrical cold wave, and then some - and I’m for it. Owing as much to The Cure’s moodier tangents as it does to Them Yorke’s more esoteric outbursts, the four-piece are bewildering as they are beguiling, building upon their often cryptic yet stark, sardonic yet poetic pose with atmospheric electronic elements and bleeding guitars that add to the ghostly vibe of the whole endeavor. Even if it’s not on your wavelength, one can’t help but be drawn to it.

Minimalism Garbage 极简主义垃圾 - 0001000

The latest techno cold wave act to cause a stir in China - MinimlaismGarbage boils down the ingredients of the genre to its bare essentials - industrial beats, razor-sharp guitars, chugging bass lines, and slick synths - with a bit of post punk euphoria and mania bleeding into it as the conceptual album progresses. And what a concept - a four-act drama in which a machine evolves into a life form - from passive repetition to thirst for vitality - allowing the sounds within to gradually become more evocative. While clubgoers may be more appreciative of the first half, the band truly comes alive in the second half.

Wasted Laika 丢莱卡 - Right now/ Left here 此时此地 

Beijing art punks Wasted Laika are back with a live album -  此时此地. Recorded last winter in Shanghai just as COVID was tearing a path across the country, it includes three unreleased works and seven rearranged favorites. Striking a mood that's raw, stripped back, with a touch of bittersweet romanticism - there is a lyrical depth to their songs that never feels cheap or unearned and a melodic drive whose attitude rings true and cuts deep. It’s a slower-paced Wasted Laika perhaps, but dense nevertheless - with each musician dancing around one another with frisky yet sharp intensity, and singer Tu Junnan 涂俊南 leaning into the theatricality of the songs. 

北京艺术朋克乐队丢莱卡带着一张现场专辑《此时此地》回来了。这张专辑是去年冬天在上海录制的，当时他们正在进行全国巡演，与此同时新冠肆虐。其中包括三首未发布的作品和七首重新编排的热门曲目。营造出一种原始、赤裸的情绪、带着苦乐参半的浪漫主义情绪——丢莱卡的歌曲中有一种抒情的深度，从不让人觉得廉价或不劳而获，而且有一种旋律的驱动力，态度真实而深刻。这也许是一个节奏较慢的丢莱卡，但还是很密集——每个乐手彼此起舞，活泼而又尖锐，而主场涂俊南的重点则放在歌曲的戏剧性上。
