Noise rock daydreamers ReJianBeiShaShou are in fine form on their new EP - 红蓝简歌 - deepening their evocative lyricism whilst expanding their musical palette in new and enticing ways. While last year’s full-length LP ‘You Leave Me Alone’ had ample amounts of angst and sensitivity - aesthetically it never quite hit the highs their earlier work had captured - both a result of adhering too much to what had come before them as well as trying to fit into the image of their label. But here their sincerity, simmering rage, and existential anxiety rings loud and true, with the EP unfolding like a short story with each chapter told in a different pose. Welcome back.

With a hefty foundation of 80s art rock, 90s alt rock, and psychedelic pop - Wuhan’s The Hospital traverses across various musical landscapes with the conviction of a seasoned band on their mammoth and most impressive debut. Invoking an era where guitars truly sang and played off its fellow musicians with rapturous affinity, it never loses its pep or way around a hook, even as it gets lost in the weeds willingly. At nearly a hour long, the band is seemingly throwing everything but the kitchen sink at audiences sonically - and while it could stand to trim off some of the fat - there’s no denying what The Hospital has done - release one of the year’s best debuts.

With its plants rooted firmly in the golden years of rock and roll in the 60s and 70s - where garage, psychedelic, and hard rock reigned supreme, and swagger was everything, Shanghai’s Vanishing Queen are a breathe of fresh air in today’s indie pop saturated world. Equal parts lean and flamboyant, with a falsetto-fronting frontman who holds nothing back, the band never comes off as trite - allowing these musical chops to elevate it’s sultry and devilishly alluring melodies. Long live the Queen!
