‘Like-minded duos known for cinematic and raw sounds as well as merging transglobal melodies with undeniable grooves’ - Beijing’s Gong Gong Gong teamed up with Taipei’s Mong Tong last weekend as the pair hit the road in support of their new collaborative LP Mongkok Duel 旺角龍虎鬥.
This was my first dance with Mong Tong - the Taipei duo that specializes in delirious subtropical psychedelia. Truly a vibrant, astute, and intoxicating sound - Lynchian vibes crossed with Asian ethnic music filtered with a sprinkle of vaporwave - with the duo conjuring an array of samples via their modular synths and electronic drum pads. Minimal yet dense in its textures - it's a unique vibe - and while it may not have made for the most exciting set (the faux blindfolds can only cover up how confined the two members are to their stations) it’s a sound I’d happily immerse myself in again.
Gong Gong Gong meanwhile has an abundance of stage presence despite lacking a drummer. And like Mong Tong - they manage to elicit magnitudes of tones and sounds from their guitar and bass - treating them as full-bodied instruments that can be used however one sees fit. As always there’s a perpetual groove to their tracks that you can’t help but sway your legs to - a locomotive train that puts up steam as it chugs along. Gritty, rugged, psychedelic, and sexy - it’s an undeniable sound that continues to be striking.
