2 Research posts in history for project applications

We are now seeking 2 researchers to write research applications with the aim to strengthen the research environment in the Wallenberg Academy Fellow (WAF) project Knowledge in Motion led by Associate Professor Johan Östling. The WAF project are funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and located within the Subject of History at the Department of History.

The positions are linked to one of the two specialisations below. Applications are to clearly indicate the position being applied for. The aim is to make one appointment in each specialisation. The research applications will generally be directed at Riksbankens jubileumsfond’s and the Swedish Research Council’s calls for applications for project grants in the spring of 2023, however, there may be other relevant funding bodies, and, in this case, they are to be specified. Any external funds awarded as a result of the applications written within the scope of the positions are expected to be allocated to the Subject of History at Lund University. If the applicant holds a position at another department, a certificate from the head of department is required confirming that any external funds awarded can be allocated to the Department of History, Lund University.

The positions are linked to the history of knowledge research carried out in Lund within the framework of the Lund Centre for the History of Knowledge (LUCK). 1. History of knowledge. The applicant is invited to develop a promising history of knowledge research issue that forms the basis for a competitive application. There are no specific thematic, chronological, geographical, methodological or theoretical requirements; however, project proposals aimed at developing the history of knowledge as a field will be prioritised, for example through the presentation of original research questions or the application of innovative perspectives.
2. European history of knowledge after circa 1980. The applicant is to formulate a research question about European history of knowledge from a contemporary history perspective. It is an advantage for the project proposal to connect to the history of European integration, European knowledge policy, the history of European universities or changes to the European knowledge community. Comparative and/or transnational studies are particularly welcome.

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a position as a researcher requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, completed no more than five years before the application deadline. Under special circumstances – parental leave, illness or similar – the PhD may have been completed earlier. A certificate supporting these reasons is to be submitted with the application.

If the applicant’s native language is not a Scandinavian language, very good and documented English language skills are required.

Special consideration will be given to applicants with a PhD (or equivalent) in a subject with a specialisation in history.

Assessment criteria

Applicants must have academic qualifications and a good ability to develop and carry out research of high international quality within the aforementioned research fields. A documented ability to obtain external research funding is an additional qualification. Assessments are made based on the documentation received and a potential interview.

Applications are to be written in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian or English and must include the following:

1. A signed curriculum vitae (max. 2 pages).
2. A certified copy of the applicant’s PhD degree certificate.
3. A cover letter (max. 1 page).
4. A project proposal (max. 2 pages) describing the specific research project on which the applicant’s formulation of their research application text will be based. The project proposal should also specify to which funding bodies the applicant plans to direct their research application.
5. A complete list of publications with five of the most important scholarly publications marked with asterisks (including the PhD thesis).

No publications are to be attached to the application. At a later stage of the process, the applicant may be asked to submit the five most significant publications (including the PhD thesis).

N.B. The applicant is responsible for ensuring that the application is complete in accordance with the instructions above and that everything is scanned (as an attached PFD file) and submitted to the University by the application deadline.

The Joint Faculties of the Humanities and Theology have eight departments and carries out large and varied work within research and education with the purpose to understand people as cultural and social beings. The faculties have around 700 employees and around 4000 students.

The Department of History is one of the eight departments within the Joint Faculties of the Humanities and Theology. It is a large department consisting of three divisions: the Division of history, the Division of human rights and the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies. Around 70 teachers and researchers work at the department. They undertake teaching within the BA programmes in history and human rights, the masters programme in history and the international masters programmes in human rights and Asian studies. The department also has a large post-graduate programme with Ph.D. students in history and human rights, as well as a research school in history.
