The Foolish Old Man

Removed the Mountains

《愚公移山》

Taihang and Wangwu were two big mountains

太行和王屋是两座大山。

in the south of Jizhou and north of Heyang.

它们位于冀州之南、河阳之北。

They were seven hundred li around,

方圆700里，

and ten thousand meters high.

高一万米。

An old man lived on the north side of the mountains.

一位老人住在山的北边。

He was 90 years old.

他90岁了。

People called him the Foolish Old Man.

人们叫他愚公。

The mountains stood in his way to the south.

大山挡住了他去往南边的路。

He was very unhappy.

他非常不开心。

So he said to his family,

于是他对他的家人说：

"Shall we work together to remove the two mountains?

“我们一起努力把这两座大山搬走怎么样？

Then we can go straight to the south."

然后我们就可以直接去往南边了。”

They agreed to his idea.

家人同意了他的想法。

The Foolish Old Man and his sons

愚公和他的儿子们

began to break rocks and dig earth.

开始敲石头挖土。

They carried the rocks and earth

他们将石头和土

in baskets to the seaside of Bohai.

用篮筐装运到渤海的岸边。

One trip to the sea

运送一次到海边

took them a long time.

要花费很长的时间。

They left in winter

他们冬天离开，

and came back in summer.

夏天才能回来。

Another old man lived by the river.

另一位老人住在河边。

People called him the Wise Old Man.

人们叫他智者。

He laughed at the Foolish Old Man

他嘲笑愚公，

and said to him,

并对他说：

"How unwise you are!

“你真是不聪明啊！

You are old and weak.

年龄老迈，体力又弱。

You cannot even pull out a tree from the mountains.

你连山上的一棵树都拉不动。

How can you remove them?"

又怎么能铲平这座山呢？”

The Foolish Old Man said,

愚公说：

"You don't understand.

“你不明白。

When I die, there will be my sons,

当我死了，还有我的儿子们，

and my sons will have their sons and grandsons.

我的儿子们还有他的儿子们和孙子们。

The family will carry on,

家族在延续，

but the mountains will not grow.

但是山的高度不会增长。

Why can't we remove them?"

我们又怎么会铲不平这座山呢？”

The God of Mountains heard the Foolish Old Man's words.

山神听到了愚公的话。

He reported the whole thing to the Heavenly God.

他把整件事报告给了天帝。

The Heavenly God was touched.

天帝被感动了。

He ordered the two sons of Kua'ershi

他命令夸娥氏的两个儿子

to remove the two mountains.

背走了两座大山。
