Why Are People of 

Different Colours?

All skin colours 

所有的肤色

come from melanin.

都来自黑色素。

Our body makes melanin 

我们的身体产生黑色素 

to protect our skin from the sun.

来抵御太阳对我们的照射。

People with more melanin

黑色素多的人 

are darker

肤色更深，

and those with less are lighter.

黑色素较少的人肤色较浅。

People in hot areas

热带地区的人们 

developed more melanin

会产生更多的黑色素，

because dark skin helped protect

因为深肤色帮助他们

against the sun and skin cancer.

抵御太阳的照射，并防止皮肤癌。

In colder countries,

在较冷的国家，

people developed lighter skin

人们的肤色较浅，

because they did not face 

因为他们不需要面对

the same kind of pressure

to protect themselves from the sun.

If your parents

came from sunny places,

you were born with more melanin

and darker skin.

you were born with less melanin

around your finger 

on a sunny day.

Take it off a few days later.

Did that part of your finger

The bandage

blocked the sun from the skin.

When sunlight hits your skin,

当阳光照射你的皮肤时，

melanin comes to protect it,

黑色素就会出来保护皮肤，

and gives you a tan.

让你变成较黑的肤色。
