Recall that synesthesia is aneurological condition that we all have at birth, and that some people keep throughout his life, namely the ability to experience several simultaneous sensations from more than one sense, in response to a single sensory stimulation. The most commonly used definition of the term"synesthesia" and probably cause fewer errors, is the etymological:Sin = Union + Esthesia = Senses: Union ofthe senses. Synaesthesia fulfils and behaves as a real perception, as it has been proven by severalresearchers (Dr. Maurer Daphne; Dr. Ramachandran and Edward M Hubbard andothers)We know that there arevarious degrees and levels of synesthesia (low, medium and high intensity), andmore than 60 categories, for example:music/colour;space /time, numeric /space, word/color, letter/color, sound/shapes,gustatory/colors … A new term with regards conceptual low intensitysynaesthesia is called ideaesthesia (earlier called quasi- synaesthesia)and ninety-nine percent of the population seems to experienceit, more related to cognitive development (or perhaps all are related to cognitive development and / or processing of information) and psycho-socialsynesthesia (the hope is green, for example, or "I have a black day"...). Ultimately these are the demonstration that our thinking is multi-modal.
It is believed that synesthesia and creativity go together, ie, the experience mostprevalent artists, painters, musician, poets and creative people, so throughouthistory have been the artists who have demonstrated the existence of thiscondition . Some artists we can mention are: Kandinsky; Paul Klee; OlivierMessien; Vladimir Novokob…
It is for this reason that here syanesthesia examples of artists from around the world areshown, to illustrate how this condition is used in art, we can see artsworksfrom Timothy B Layden (London), Carol Steen (New York);Dina Riccò(Milan),Carol Steen (New York),JamesWannerton (London),Christina Soffing (Ulm) ,Raewyn Turner (New Zealand)、Pepa Salas Vilar(Hannover)、Tremedad Gnecco (Canada), Michael Haverkamp (Cologne), Ninghui XIONG (Beijing). Thoseartworks are according to their synesthesia experience. We also observed some feature among artworks from other Chinese artists, Lei WANG, Mu Xi, Wu Fa ZHOU, Rui TANG where synaesthesia was expressed not intentionally. Also we can see visual music productions (MuVi),international contest on visual music and synesthesia), from some students, professors and artists using the concept of synesthesia, or their synesthesia expression for their creations.
Photographs byJian Wei HE in the exhibition reflected Chinese culture and landscape indicted this rich culture in synesthesia. In China, it is also known since ancienttimes this phenomenon various schemes relating such matters as seasons of the year, body parts, facialfeatures, and planets (Reference to some report from Jewanski, Sean A Day), Since ancient times, China shows in his art andmusic intimately linked processes multisensoriality, emotion and poetry, whichwas shown emotional synesthesia and interaction between music and painting. There will be also in display the Xiang ZHANG’s music scopeof chimes inspired by ancient Zeng Hou Yi decoration pattern related to 28groups of star, the photo of stone inscription of HAN related to Chinese mythology by Qingang FANG, the study of Dunhuang frescoes related to automaticmusic instrument playing by Li ZHONG, as well as oil painting of Ninghui inspired by ancient Gu Qin music “the dialogue between fisherman and woodcutter”.And thus it is to be linked our coming project: “Cross regional synesthesiasurvey in China”. 首届中国联觉艺术展论坛 “跨地域的联觉调研”Our objectives are to study the relationship between synesthesiaand creativity, sensory representation through language, also to make acomparative study population between European and Chinese, in the educative andartistic scope and current practice in education by synesthesia creativity.
Oil painting of Ninghui XIONG (Parts), inspired by ancient Gu Qin music “the dialogue between fisherman and woodcutter”, more focus on music synaesthesia in shape and line in the painting.
Artecittá International Arts Foundation as a proposal framed by the concept reinforced bythe ideologue D'Urso on a Utopian City of Arts, part of the German tradition ofGropius' Bauhaus, trying restoration and reconciliation between differentactivities art, not marginalizing craft and artistic disciplines and transformthem into something according to the new architecture.Artecittà has developed through internationalconferences “Synesthesia, science and art” since 2005, in which scientists andartists from around the world meet and discuss their new findings about thiscondition, creating new networks of scientific communication, as well as newworking groups, including Ninghui XIONG and Tongjun DING from China. It was them, several centers of China are currently incorporated. Thanks to the work of Ninghui and his collaborators Tongjun DING and Lei WANGfor their great support to bring me here in the project, 中国联觉同盟之路 Road Map of CSA and they are now as memberof big family in Artecittà. I do hope to learn more here in China through the project because his culture and art isimbued with an exquisite sensibility, in every sense.
Since over 25 years study in synesthesia, especially for our development in Artecittà and itssponsored international congress of synaesthesia, including my interdisciplinarystudy group in Granada University with Oscar Iborra / Emilio Gómez from experimental psychology, for the coming event “Cross Regional Syanesthesia Survey and Synaesthesia Exhibition and Forum in China”首届中国联觉艺术展论坛 “跨地域的联觉调研”, I would like to raise the topic asinterdisciplinary study of synesthesia which is very important starting point to introduce about concept ofsynesthesia and its study. Our topic is Interdisciplinary Synesthesia Study and not only in art, music and literature, but also in otherfields like Neurology, Psychology, Psychiatry, Language and Education.Becausewithin the overall project proposal interdisciplinary research on synesthesia, I raised in 2000/2, which includedthe acquisition of new knowledge of synaesthesia that can be useful to create new products and new procedures on technologies of representation and creation, based on theuse of different senses interfaces. Education and formation; Services and software are enabling the design of new methods using multimedia systems andsimulation, with specific application possibilities (people with disabilities). Its development becomes an integrated project. An investigation in which each area of knowledge should transfer results for the solution (scientific /technological objective) or finding solutions of common problems raised. In my conclusion, new approaches in the field of arts education that the university provides students with a creative response, motivates them in the generation of new projects, ideas and artistic production
I do appreciate theinvitation hosted by Mr. Jianwei HE at his Art Gallery with Ninghui and hisfriends for the great effort for the exhibition. I amvery happy, excited in this new project here in China, and hope to return oftento continue learning Chinese culture and its synesthetic abilities.
