The Artists behind the 93rd Oscars Campaign Art
"What do movies mean to you?”
This is the question set out by the art campaign of this year’s annual Oscars ceremony. Under the tagline “Bring Your Movie Love,” the campaign brings together seven artists from different corners of the world in a celebration of film as a method of escapism, connection, education, inspiration, and storytelling. Artists Temi Coker, Petra Eriksson, Magnus Voll Mathiassen (MvM), Michelle Robinson, Karan Singh, Victoria Villasana, and Shawna X were tasked with reinterpreting the iconic Oscar statue with the aforementioned question.
Most notable in this year’s campaign is the vibrant colors used by the artists as well as their range of techniques which include, illustration, motion design, painting, photography, and textile art. From racial representation to the dichotomy of things, each artist explores an array of themes brought about by their personal experiences and emotions.

Nigerian artist Temi Coker uses a mix of vibrant colors and textures which come from his upbringing and love for the African Diaspora. His style focuses on evoking emotion through color, patterns, and storytelling. To Coker, movies are about creativity, inspiration, and the art of storytelling. His artwork is a personal and emotional piece that reimagines the Oscar statuette as the black pioneers that have paved the path for other black individuals, helping their future generation to believe that they can achieve success no matter the obstacles that stand in their way. On the statuette, he juxtaposes a striking contrast of bright colors and alluring patterns to represent the emotions that he feels when watching people just like himself- awe, hope, realization, among others.
“This representation transcends past film and into our lives. Our future kids/mentees will look at us and think “because they did, I can.” Black representation matters and always will. I pray we never lose sight of that.”
- Temi Coker

Swedish artist Petra Eriksson is an avid traveler and illustrator based in Barcelona. Her art consists of bold imagery that uses colors and shapes as an emotional outlet. Filled with diverse references and themes, Eriksson’s artworks showcase a strong balance of color and neat composition that make her simplistic creations that much more visually pleasing. To Petra Eriksson movies serve as an escape from reality. She would often find parallels between movies and her experiences manipulating them as an inspiration for her art.
“It’s a tool to understand other situations differently, or even understand my own situation better by getting a new perspective or recognizing something I’ve been through in someone else’s story”
-Petra Eriksson
Erikkson’s vivid statuette highlights the immersive elements of a film such as sound, imagery, and acting that can bring about emotions that evoke past experiences.

Norwegian artist Magnus Voll Mathiassen, also known as MVM works on illustration, graphic design, and art direction projects for major brands and celebrities. His style consists of strong colors, rounded edges, and patterns that are based on experiments of mixed techniques. MVM finds joy in the technical parallels found within art and film, describing it as an “organism where magic flows through its system.” Likewise, his statuette represents a personified version of a complex and ever-changing “ecosystem” that is the film industry and all those connected to it. Strokes of colors become the silhouettes for the figure itself while also illuminating the different layers behind movies.

4. Michelle Robinson

Michelle Robinson, also known as Mister Michelle is a Korean American visual artist, whose work is the study of contrast, colors, patterns, and the female form. Inspired by the female form and its ability to manipulate surrounding elements, Robinson paints works that deeply explore self-empowerment, identity, community, sexuality, freedom, and the human condition. Her Oscar statuette references birth and origin under the concept, the genesis of movies: theaters. Paying homage not only to the golden era of Hollywood where films like Metropolis (1927) or performers like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton graced the big screen but also to its elaborately decorated architecture.
“I envisioned the Oscar silhouette encapsulated in an intricate framework that exemplifies the theater; a renowned figure centered proudly as the heart and soul within this architectural body. Theater & Performer—a sublime symbolism of body and soul.”

5. Karan Singh

Karan Singh is an Australian artist and illustrator that creates contemporary art inspired by optical-art minimalism and graphic design. Using a wide range of mediums including prints, animation, video, augmented reality, puzzles, sculpture, and clothing, Singh playfully explores the perception of depth and dimension through patterns and repetition. For the artist, movies not only act as a source of inspiration but also as a form of artistic analysis.
“From the photography, to wardrobe, to the lighting, to the editing and beyond, I enjoy trying to understand how and why they’ve made the decisions they have and what that means for the story…Ultimately, it’s always a joy to watch other artists work, if not to inspire than to better understand your own work.”
-Karan Singh
Singh’s reinterpretation of the Oscar statuette is influenced by harmony and unity. Recalling how films had alleviated the stress of isolation during the pandemic by entertaining, distracting, consoling, and inspiring people in a time of need. Through the repeating layers of the main figure, Singh seeks to portray the diversity of talents required in creating a film, reflect a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes.

6. Victoria Villasana

Victoria Villasana is a Mexican textile artist interested in history, culture and how people relate to each other through their vulnerabilities in a fragmented and post-digital world. She stitches colorful shapes in the form of dots and stripes over colorless photographs, giving power to the image. The spirit of her art is characterized by the way the thread is left uncut and seemingly unfinished, exploring the importance of acceptance of impermanence and imperfection in life. Through her art, Villasana strives to connect emotionally with people as a drive for positive social impact. By weaving her threads, she recreates a new story that connects us to “express the resiliency and creativity of the human spirit.” A sentiment she shares with the purpose of film:
“Films create a bridge of communication and make us understand deep truths about our connection with the other as humans. They also allow us to play with our imagination and fantasize about other worlds”

Shawna X is a Chinese independent visual artist and creative known for her vibrant, and graphical image-making. She enjoys projects about cultural identity, the creative process, and more. The artist describes her creative development as a product of her cross-cultural upbringing in the USA, noting the dichotomy of things such as those between individualism vs. collectivism.
"This dichotomy existed in almost every aspect, from money, gender roles, sex, to food, and whilst it was challenging in many ways, the dichotomy helped me form my own opinions on this role in life, without necessarily adhering to what was taught.”
- Shawna X
Using visceral imagery, Shawna X finds contrasting concepts that form the basis of the human experience and with regard to her view on film, this is also the same. She believes movies to be both an inspiration and an escape: By using the eye to represent the audience, and the surrounding elements to release the energies, the artist portrays the Oscar statuette as a dichotomy of experiences that viewers get, a mix of emotions, motivations, and audiovisual delight.
