As a fully-integrated platform featuring both high professional levels and wide social participation built for designers, students and the public, the competition is intended to improve the urban-rural space quality with creative ideas and designs, as well as lead and promote the emergence of social consensus on architectural culture. The 5th "Zijin Award" of Architectural Design & Environmental Art Contests will be held in 2018 with the theme "Livable Countryside and Our Homeland". Hereby we announce the following information:

1.Purpose of the Contests

This year’s contests adopt the theme of "Livable Country and Our Homeland" as both an implementation of the strategy of rural vitalization and relevant requirements for building a beautiful and livable countryside proposed in the 19th CPC National Congress and an extension of the "idyllic countryside" theme of the 4th contests. Centering round "New Age, New Countryside and New Life," the contests require participants to focus on villages in real life and make creative design for farm houses, public buildings and surroundings in the countryside, in order to promote the construction of a beautiful and livable homeland rooted in the rural society, rich in local characteristics, bearing idyllic nostalgia and embodying modern civilization and echoing the needs and longings of rural inhabitants for a better life.

2.Subject Selection and Requirements

The subject selection is open-ended in the contests. Participants can select villages to be designed regardless of the limit of administrative divisions, which can be existing villages or new rural communities. The organizing committee will offer the catalogue of villages in several batches for participants to consult and select (the first batch is attached). Participants can, according to their creative ideas and the focus of their designs, conceive their subtitles and design tasks. The design contents can be new, expanded, refurbished or upgraded farm houses, individual units or clusters of public buildings, public places and space of a village, rural surroundings or architectural oddments. Participants are encouraged to provide comprehensive design plans for villages.

Participants are required to offer creative design plans to improve life in the countryside focusing on realistic problems. They should take an in-depth research into the countryside and create based on the natural environment, cultural characteristics and economic conditions; show respect to villagers’ wills and practical needs, organic integration of villages into the rural surroundings; attach importance to the application of rural materials and local varieties of trees; pay high regard to the expression of traditional culture and local characteristics, the blend of characteristics of the times with green construction concepts, the integration of facilities such as photovoltaics into buildings. Also the application of new construction methods such as prefabrication is encouraged.

3.Group Division and Target Participants

Participants will be divided into the professional group, the student group and the public group. The professional group is composed of designers and teachers of relevant majors and other practitioners in relevant fields; the student group consists of full-time current students of relevant majors (including undergraduates, graduates and doctorates); the public group is composed of participants from all the other circles of society who have never received education in relevant majors and practiced in relevant fields.
