2018年3月23日15:30（星期五）由爱尔兰策展人达沃·霍根（Darragh Hogan）策划的“漫长角力（Long Game）：梅林·詹姆斯”展将在华侨城盒子美术馆开幕。本次展览由华侨城盒子美术馆主办，爱尔兰科林画廊及华·美术馆联合主办。梅林·詹姆斯(Merlin James)是英国著名艺术家，本次展览是艺术家首次在中国的大型个展。

本次展览征集了艺术家83件作品，包括34件绘画作品和49件素描作品，创作历时1983至2017年，对艺术家的创作脉络做了一个较完整的回顾。这次的作品囊括两种不同的风格和主题：“框架绘画 ”与“暗色绘画”。“框架绘画 ”系列是在制作绮丽的木质框架上用轻而薄的材料加以创作，具有犹如视窗的视线，兼有一种轻盈而脆弱的质感；“暗色绘画”系列是在画布上施以笔墨浓厚的颜料。作品或是色彩轻松的涂抹，或是炭笔在纸上苍劲的表达。艺术家从乡村风景中找到了一些被孤立的细节： 一幢有层叠烟雾的房屋、 一只盘踞在树枝上的孤鸟、或寂寞的人形等等。艺术评论家约翰•尤(John Yau)说：“相对喧嚣，梅林•詹姆斯更喜欢静宜，相对繁杂他更喜欢简化”。梅林•詹姆斯在他的批评著作《绘画本身》中评价美国艺术家亚力克斯·凯玆(Alex Katz)的评论，同样适宜于他自己: “他的绘画并不刻意寻求新奇，却从不重复；他虽然洞悉世事，却不愤世嫉俗。作品里总会有不安，和反复出现的阻难，但他从不炫耀其艰难困苦。”

梅林·詹姆斯现工作和生活于苏格兰格拉斯哥，主要的个展有：“漫长的角力(2016)”，苏格兰格拉斯哥当代艺术中心；“自由风格(2014)”，德国弗赖贝格艺术协会； “梅林·詹姆斯(2013)”， 英国伦敦太阳伞艺术中心; “信号盒子(2013)”，德国柏林KW当代艺术学院；“在画廊(2012)”，爱尔兰都柏林道格拉斯·海德画廊；茶壶院美术馆个展（1996），英国剑桥。2007年，詹姆斯代表威尔士参加了第52届威尼斯双年展。他曾是英国和美国多所著名大学的客座讲师，在2002年他受邀担任纽约库珀联盟艺术学院(Cooper Union)的阿历克斯•凯玆(Alex Katz)绘画中心负责人。

Curated by Darragh Hogan, "Long Game: Merlin James" is hosted by Boxes Art Museum, co-hosted by Kerlin Gallery, Dublin and OCT Art and Design Gallery, Shenzhen.

"Long Game: Merlin James" provides a survey of James’s long career to date, featuring 83 artworks, including 34 paintings and 49 drawings, that span over 30 years of the artist’s work and present a diverse selection of genres, styles and subjects. The exhibition brings together two important but distinct strands of James’ work. First, a substantial selection of James’ ‘frame paintings’, each painted on a light, gauzy material stretched over an ornate wooden frame. Acting like windows, this body of work has a lightness and fragility that finds its counterpoint in the second group of paintings on display, the ‘black paintings’ – dense and self-contained works of acrylic on canvas. The latter work in loose daubs of paint or equip broad sweeps of charcoal on paper, they pinpoint isolated details from rural or semi-rural landscapes: a house with stacked chimneys; a bird landing on a branch; the occasional, isolated figure.
In his book Painting Per Se, James writes a description of his admired forebear, the American painter Alex Katz, that could be equally applied to his own work: “His paintings are never repetitive, though they do not seek novelty; they are never cynical, though utterly disabused; they are always restless, strenuous and reoccurringly difficult, while never parading difficultness.”

James lives and works in Glasgow. Recent solo exhibitions CCA Glasgow (2016); Kunstverein Freiburg (2014); Parasol Unit, London; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2013); Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin (2012, 2015); New York Studio School (2007); Kettle's Yard, Cambridge (1996) and National Gallery, Wales (1995). In 2007, James represented Wales at the 52nd Venice Biennale. He has been a visiting lecturer at many universities in Britain and the USA and in 2002, he was the first holder of the Alex Katz Chair in Painting at The Cooper Union, New York.
