华维光是来自内蒙古通辽的一名退休教师,爱好摄影。在他的家乡有着中国最大的沙地,科尔沁沙地。这片沙地横跨三省,是中国北方沙尘暴的主要来源。
Hua Weiguang, a retired teacher from Tongliao, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, is a photography enthusiast. A decade ago, he noticed the arrival of tree planters in Horqin and started to take photos of them. His photos are evidence of the remarkable transformation of the land.
For the workers fighting desertification, hats, scarves and goggles are basic necessities to protect them from the wind and sand.
夏天没有乘凉处,工人们只能就地躺下,或是蜷缩在车旁的一片狭窄阴影里纳凉。午餐只能在野外就着风沙解决,砂砾伴着饭菜一起吃到嘴里。
There was no way to avoid the brutal summer heat. Workers had to lie down on the ground or curl up in the narrow shade of their cars to cool off. They also had to eat their lunch amid the blowing sands, taking in the grit with their food.
华维光问治沙工人们中暑怎么办?他们回答:“我们带着藿香正气水,吃点药,喝点水,缓解了后还得继续干。”
不管是严寒酷暑还是风沙来袭,成百上千的治沙人都像战士一样守在沙坨子里继续干活。
"If we don't fool the tree, it won't fool you. You take it seriously, it does reciprocally. You put efforts to make it live, the tree lives up to your expectation," Chao says.
China's forest resources have increased by over 70 million hectares in the past decade, ranking first in the world. One tree after another, a green Great Wall has been built. Brush by brush, a green field has been painted over the yellow sandy land.
华维光说:“我的一个远大理想是在那建一个博物馆,里边有他们劳动的工具,有当时图片,让更多的人记住这些人的功绩,记住这些功臣。”
