Exploring traditional farming culture with Tsinghua students
A journey back to nature:
a combination of labor
and reading classics
The "Labor and Reading" course is a form of labor education that Xinya College has been exploring since 2019. This course aims to interrupt the intense study rhythm of students and bring peace to their minds. it also provides students with unique experiences by getting close to workers and farmers, thus developing a work ethic and thinking about social issues. During the course, students work in the fields during the daytime and gather at night to read books such as The Analects of Confucius and Walden.
Providing students with accessible
farming resources
Xinya Farm (Xinya College Farm) is an experimental base consisting of about 13.3 hectares and 40 grid plots. Located in Zhoujiaxiang Village in Sujiatuo Town, Haidian District, the farm is home to approximately 10 crops, mainly edible crops such as peas, potatoes, tomatoes, and cucumbers.
In late 2020, Professor Zhang Weite wondered how to ensure that students could still experience labor during the COVID-19 pandemic. This led to the idea of establishing Xinya Farm. After intense efforts to address various problems, the farm was officially established on December 18, 2021, and opened on March 12, 2022.
Xinya Farm is open to the entire school and is jointly operated by Xinya College, Zhili College, Tanwei College, Xingjian College, and the School of Economics and Management.
Gaining novel insights and valuable life skills
Students from different colleges shared their experiences and insights gained from participating in farm labor activities.
Students from Xinya and Zhili Colleges participated in farm activities to relax, explore new experiences, and escape academic pressures.
Laura (Shen Yaning) found it challenging but gained respect for farmers and agricultural skills. Zhang Shengyue enjoyed the unique experience and broadened her perspective as a biology major. Ma Tianyu appreciated learning basic agricultural skills and the fresh air. Zhang Yang from Zhili College enjoyed taking a break from school and found the farm work knowledge beneficial for future endeavors.
The "labor and reading" course at Xinya Farm has significantly enriched the academic and personal lives of its participants. Surveys from Xinya College reveal that students not only mastered practical agricultural skills but also developed a profound respect for the labor involved. This experience has effectively bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, enhancing their educational journey.
