Tsinghua welcomes Japanese delegation led by Toshihiro Nikai
On August 27th, Tsinghua University welcomed a Japanese delegation led by Toshihiro Nikai, Chairperson of the Japan-China Friendship Parliamentarians' Union and a senior member of Japan's House of Representatives. The visit, rich in discussions about youth-oriented educational and cultural exchanges, featured key figures, including Hiroshi Moriyama, Chairperson of the General Council of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party; Kenji Kanasugi, the Japanese Ambassador to China; and Zhang Xiaoping, Vice Secretary-General of the China-Japan Friendship Association.
Qiu Yong, Secretary of the CPC Tsinghua University Committee, welcomed the delegation and lauded Mr. Nikai's significant contributions to enhancing dialogue between China and Japan. He emphasized the profound impact of Mr. Nikai's earlier initiatives, notably his role in enabling Tsinghua students to visit Japan—a pivotal initiative in strengthening bilateral ties. This year, the Japanese government has extended another invitation for 100 Tsinghua students, underlining the ongoing commitment to youth exchanges. Reflecting on the enduring relationship between the two nations, Qiu Yong highly praised the significance of the "Oga Lotus," a symbolic gift from Mr. Nikai during Tsinghua University's 108th anniversary. Revived through modern scientific methods, this ancient seed now blossoms beautifully at Tsinghua, representing the longstanding friendship between the two nations.
Qiu Yong also highlighted educational institutions' significant role in promoting international understanding. Over the years, Tsinghua University has established collaborations with 29 Japanese universities and has been at the forefront of various initiatives with major Japanese corporations, significantly boosting academic and practical exchanges.
During the delegation's visit, Mr. Nikai led a ceremonial planting of three cherry trees at Tsinghua. This tree-planting ceremony was inspired by a moment from Mr. Nikai's 2015 visit to China, during which Chinese President Xi Jinping referred to the proverb, "One generation plants a tree; the next sits in its shade." emphasizing the importance of building a legacy for the future. Reflecting on these words, Mr. Nikai's participation in the ceremony underscored his commitment to fostering a prosperous future and nurturing a lasting bond between the two countries.
The planted cherry trees blossom anew each spring, marking a season of renewal and growth. This perennial blossoming serves as a testament to the deepening ties of friendship and mutual understanding between China and Japan, promising enduring benefits for future generations.
