The world is flat. Global economies are increasingly intertwined and technology and communication have no geographical boundaries. Schools, like the Western International School of Shanghai (WISS), are tasked with addressing teaching and learning that reflects our flattening world; and 21st Century Skills are the hot topic within the education community. Universities want to see these in applications and employers want to hire people with these skills-but are we all aware what these skills are?

According to the Partnership for 21st Century Learning (http://www.p21.org/ )(coalition of education, business community and policymakers), the 21st Century Student Outcomes are:

21st Century Student Outcomes

-Content Knowledge and 21st Century Themes-

These are the more “traditional” disciplines of the past-Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, World Languages, History, etc. but embedded into themes that are intentional about Global Awareness, Environment, Civic, Health and Business literacies.

-Learning and Innovation Skills-

These are the skills that have been identified to help students in an increasingly complex life and work environment. These are

1) Creativity and Innovation,

2) Critical Thinking and Problem Solving,

3) Communication,

4) Collaboration.

Known as “The 4 C’s” you will find many business leaders and multinational business leaders champion these as highly sought after skills in today’s workforce.

-Information, Media and Technology Skills-

This goes beyond coding and design, it incorporates evaluation and effectively utilizing information.

-Life and Career Skills-

These are

1) Flexibility and Adaptability,

2) Initiative and Self Direction,

3) Social and Cross-Cultural Skills,

4) Productivity and Accountability,

5) Leadership and Responsibility.

The International Baccalaureate Programme

The International Baccalaureate Programmes(http://www.wiss.cn/the-ib-programme/)were similarly born out of this idea of the world becoming flatter and increasingly integrated with a clear purpose to “build a better and more peaceful world.” It’s evident that the skills and attitudes needed to fulfill this mission aligns with what the Partnership for 21st Century Learning is addressing.

The direct correlation between the two frameworks shows how schools like WISS, using the IB education framework, are poised to shape well-rounded students in order to address a “flatter” world.

Our students will be in a better position to use their knowledge and skills to make informed choices with a global perspective-one that will help them thrive in an increasingly complex world but also one that will help create a better and more peaceful world.
