Wellington College China launches the 2021 Shuping Scholarship

In 2019, Wellington College China launched our version of the Shuping Scholarship in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the original Shuping Scholarship. The Wellington College China Shuping Scholarship was established in partnership with the Shanghai Educational Development Foundation and Shuping Scholarship. This is the highest level of scholarship programme offered within our group. Its mission is to provide full financial support for outstanding pupils from Chinese working-class families who seek a top-quality education at our Wellington or Huili schools.

Wellington College China and

the Shuping Scholarship

The Shuping Scholarship was established in Shanghai by Mr Qianlin Gu in 1939. For 80 years and three generations, the scholarship has benefited a large number of pupils who had to study under poor conditions. To date, the scholarship continues to operate across China as the longest-running scholarship programme with the greatest number of beneficiaries. In the early 90s, Ms Joy Qiao, Founder and Chairman of Wellington College China, was awarded the scholarship for her academic performance.

In the spirit of giving back to society that which was gained from it, Ms Qiao introduced the Shuping Scholarship to Wellington College China schools in the hopes of leveraging all available resources to put our educational ethos into wider practice.

One year later, we are honoured to share the latest developments in this scholarship programme to all our readers.

At the ceremony, Ms Qiao addressed the audience in attendance, saying, “The Shuping Scholarship model, ‘De Zhu She Hui, Huan Zhu She Hui (得诸社会,还诸社会),’ literally means you receive from the society and you also give back to the society. I think the experience I’ve been through is just a perfect example of that. I received from Shuping Scholarship. Without it, I couldn't have become the person that I am. Now I’m in a position to give back to the society. It gives me no greater pleasure than knowing that in our little effort we might just be able to change some young people's lives."

I believe that our school motto, ‘Cultivating talent through virtue, kindness and integrity,’ coincides with the Shuping spirit. It's my great pleasure to be here to announce officially the launch of the Shuping Scholarship programme at Huili School Shanghai.

The launch of the Shuping Scholarship marks an important milestone for Huili School Shanghai. The group is now in an even stronger position to provide a top-quality education for exceptional pupils in the Shuping spirit.

Wellington College China’s

first Shuping Scholars

The Wellington Shuping Scholarship Programme was first introduced to Wellington College Bilingual Tianjin A Level Centre in 2019. This month, the Shuping Scholarship Beijing Alumni Association's board of directors selected four Wellington College Bilingual Tianjin A Level Centre pupils as the first Shuping scholars at Wellington College China.

Julian Jeffrey, Master of Wellington College Tianjin, expressed his joy regarding the good news,

I am so delighted that these four remarkable young pupils have been recognised through the award of a Shuping Scholarship. The programme is one of the most generous and prestigious academic prizes in China, and the entire Wellington College China family of schools joins me in congratulating our pupils in their achievement. Their outstanding academic potential is allied to a strong sense of responsibility to the community they come from, here in Tianjin.

They will be the first of a number of Shuping scholars from across our family of schools to go on to study at the world’s most elite universities, highlighting once more Wellington’s commitment to giving pupils of all backgrounds the chance to shine in their studies and beyond.

Huili School Hangzhou

launches its Shuping Scholarship

Last month, Huili School Hangzhou announced that it will launch its 2021-2022 Shuping Scholarship Programme as well and is now recruiting applicants for it.

Why Wellington College China's

Shuping Scholarship is special

The Shuping Scholarship is the highest-level scholarship offered at Wellington College China schools and is open to outstanding pupils from Chinese working-class families.

It provides full coverage of a Wellington or Huili school’s tuition fees, meals, uniforms and boarding fees, making it essentially a ‘110% scholarship’.

Recipients whose academic results and conduct meet the scholarship’s requirements upon enrolment can reapply for the scholarship each year until they graduate from High School. This means that recipients who show outstanding performance can receive up to one million yuan in scholarship aid during their time at school.

At Wellington College China, we believe that scholarships allow pupils to pursue their dreams through hard work. In addition to our scholarships, Wellington and Huili schools also provide comprehensive admissions and career support to all recipients to help them realise their potential and achieve academic excellence.
