On the last Wednesday of each month, Green Solutions hosts a free film screening called Green Screening Series. The event features an educational film on an on-going environmental issue, a guest speaker who gives a damn about our planet and a hands-on eco-friendly activity. The screenings are free of charge to attend, but event attendees are welcome to make donations. All of the proceeds go to the social enterprise Blue Sheep Crafts and Gifts based in Chengdu, China.

Ray is originally from the UK, where she worked as a doctor. But how did she end up owning a craft shop in Chengdu, China?!
Ray became a doctor because she wanted to help people around the world. While studying medicine in the UK, Ray had an opportunity to go to Nepal to experience the health care system there.
In Nepal, most doctors live in the big cities, which means that the rural areas are left with very little medical care. While in Nepal, Ray would regularly hear that the people were too poor, and that this was causing or prolonging their medical problems.
After her time in Nepal, Ray drove to India and has since worked in 15 different countries, training others in rural areas to treat the sick, injured and disabled, and providing medical information in local languages.
During her travels, Ray heard that people would choose to amputate a child’s broken leg because their family could not afford the expenses to have it fixed properly. It became clear to Doctor Ray that, as well as making sure that healthcare is available in remote places, one important way to increase the health of the poor is to alleviate their poverty.
Doctor Ray used her own money to open Blue Sheep to help the needy. She recently sold her apartment, and is open to using the money from this if Blue Sheep needs it in the future.
The Blue Sheep store is a social enterprise that collects handcrafts from different minorities - from those with disabilities or heavy medical bills or suffering from poverty for some other reason. Blue Sheep pays on receipt of products so craftsmen do not have to wait for payment. In this way, Blue Sheep has already supported 800 people in China and abroad.
Blue Sheep then markets these special products locally and internationally. Profits are put back into individual or community projects to fight poverty.
Blue Sheep arranges training and plans to have design workshops to link some of the producers with designers who can help to make truly great products with hopes that this will help to preserve some ancient skills and culture and showcase them to a wide audience.
In addition to buying and selling local handcrafts, Blue Sheep has provided relief items such as food and bedding, solar lights, first aid equipment and livestock to farmers after earthquakes, floods and landslides; books for community libraries; scholarships for poor students, and facility improvements in three schools for migrant workers’ children.
Ray herself was recently diagnosed with breast cancer but has received treatment and is currently healthy - cycling around Chengdu and working almost every day! Doctor Ray’s goal is to build a company that is sustainable, that truly benefits the producers and whose products bring great pleasure to the buyers. This is a real challenge, as selling handcrafts does not usually bring large profits. However, Ray embraces the challenge and gives it her best try!
