Wet Market Vegan Tour
Morning Market Tour (Plant-Based & Plastic-Free!)
After watching a video online about Kunming’s most famous wet market, Leo(Founder at Zero Plastic Vegan Tours) decided to move to Kunming. Since then, he has spent almost every day in the market, getting to know the local vendors and sampling the abundance of fresh fruit and veggies, snacks, and meals available from all regions of Yunnan. Stepping in this market is like going to a botanical garden for him. As he explores the markets, he thinks about how the market flavors can be appreciated and shared in the most sustainable manner.

OUR GUESTS
On this tour, you will get to experience this wet market with us from a plant-based and plastic-free perspective. Our guide will introduce you to 5-6 vegan snack foods (which you will eat while exploring the stalls) and 2-3 vegan meal-sized dishes (that you will sit around a table to enjoy). Some dishes to sample include: douhua mixian (豆花米线) or Kunming’s famous rice noodles smothered in spices and tofu and xidoufen (稀豆粉) a delicious, thick gravy made from ground peas topped with spices. You’ll try cakes made from local buckwheat, corn or purple rice and sample freshly fried lotus fritters. As you wander through the market stalls, vendors will hand out samples from their shops and our guide will help you ask for a taste of anything that catches your eye.

The amount of delicious vegan food you can find in this market is enough to impress any carnivore. You don’t need to be a vegan or vegetarian to sign up for this tour; we guarantee that you will leave this tour with your stomach full, taste buds satisfied, and your curiosity piqued. On this tour, our guide will also share with you our plastic-free lifestyle. We will help you to refuse all single-use plastic disposables from the vendors and provide you with a reusable silicone food bag to hold your food samples. Get ready to see how a plastic-free life is possible in China!
PLEASE NOTE. The tour starts at 9:30am and lasts for roughly three hours. The market is not a vegan market. Participants can expect to see non-vegan stalls, such as butchers and live fish vendors. This tour is not recommended for vegans who mind cross-contamination. In China, it’s still common to use the same cooking tools for meat and non-meat food. Non-vegan participants are welcome on the tour and non-vegan food options will be available for purchase. However, we ask that any participants refrain from purchasing non-vegan food until after the tour ends. In this market, there are public restrooms available but no western-style toilets.
We BRING OUR OWN basket, bag, cup, bowl...
WHAT TO BRING. Please bring your own reusable water bottle if you have one. Please bring a reusable bag or container in case you want to purchase any snacks at the market. If you are traveling without a reusable shopping bag or water bottle, just send a message before the tour starts and we will support you in getting what you need. Should you wish to keep your reusable bag at the end of the tour, you can purchase it for additional cost! You can expect to be on your feet walking and observing for at least two hours; comfortable footwear is recommended.

-Tour Two(Kunming, Yunnan)-
Night Market Vegan Tour
Night Market Tour (Plant-Based and Plastic-Free!)
This night market lies in the heart of downtown Kunming’s “urban village.” Every night, vendors set up stalls along the central walking street to feed new urbanites heading home from a long day of work. All evening, vendors call out advertisements for their best dishes, friends laugh over a shared meal, and oil sputters and pops as street-food chefs work. In this famous walking-street market, after-work meals have been known to turn into parties that last until the early hours of the morning.
China’s urbanization efforts in the last few decades have resulted in “urban villages” popping up in many of China’s lesser-known cities like Kunming. Landowners build multi-story buildings and rent them to the young dream-chasers from all over China. The residents of the resulting “Urban Village” are often transient but lively. The area bursts with excitement over new circumstances, new connections, and –– of course ––new foods.
During this tour, we will introduce you to this bustling night market near the city center. You will sample 5 – 6 different vegan dishes. Some of these dishes you will taste as you wander the market and some you will sit around a table to enjoy. We will also take you to the largest mushroom market in Kunming (this activity is only available seasonally, usually from June to September, located right near the market!) and to a few hidden treasures in the allies of the urban village. You will complete the tour with a cold beer (or other beverage) in hand.
The amount of delicious vegan food you can find in the night market is enough to impress any carnivore. You don’t need to be a vegan or vegetarian to sign up for this tour; we guarantee that you will leave this tour with your stomach full, taste buds satisfied, and your curiosity piqued. On this tour, we will also share with you our plastic-free lifestyle.
