Yunnan is one of the most important social sights in China and an absolute must-see for people who visit China. Yunnan boasts a preserved and unique environment and ecosystems filled with abundant vegetation that is unlike anywhere else in China. Kunming, the capital city, mainly serves as the transport hub for people traveling to other regions of Yunnan with only a handful of tourists taking the time to explore the city and its surrounding scenic spots. With a long history of Buddhism and vegetarianism, China is deeply rooted in this culture. Most of the temples in China serve vegetarian food, and Kunming is no exception. Unlike its counterpart, Dali, which is a more popular tourist destination, the vegan scene in Kunming lacks an abundance of variety. Most of the vegan/vegetarian restaurants in Kunming serve buffet food and have Buddhist influences. They are often crowded with the local elderly. Tourists and foreigners alike are rarely seen in most of the local vegan restaurants. After having experienced all of the vegan restaurants in Kunming, we are thrilled to find out that the owners and staff of these restaurants in general are much happier and more friendly than the regular restaurant employers and staff. Not only do they advocate for veganism, most of them are also conscious about eating healthier and preserving the natural environment. Most of the ingredients they use, if not 100% organic, are definitely fresh and house-made without harmful chemical additives.

One of dozens of vegan buffet restaurants in town. It is located in a beautiful park overseeing a tranquil pond and offers a great view of the Kunming skyline. The first floor serves up vegan buffet food. Head up from the stairway outside of the restaurant to the second floor for vegan buffet hotpot.

Gancaoyuan Tea Restaurant(Vegan-friendly, Buffet and A la carte menu)
It is not a fully vegan restaurant, but it does offer an extensive vegan/vegetarian menu in addition to their regular food. The restaurant is very spacious - it takes up the whole floor of a long complex building, hence different sections serving different types of food, including vegetarian buffet, hotpot, stir-fried dishes, and vegetarian set meals. The little hole-in-wall street-side restaurant on the first floor has a few vegan/vegetarian noodle options.
The staff didn’t seem to be very friendly. They didn’t allow me to take photos and looked at me quite suspiciously after I tried to ask for some information about the place. Even when I found their phone number online to call to confirm some details needed for this guide, the staff refused to answer and said their boss can deal with that.

Yuquanzhai Vegan/Vegetarian Shop
This small shop sells pre-packaged vegan/vegetarian food and snacks and is located right next to Yuantong Temple. Didn’t find out much useful information about the place. The staff was a bit grumpy and didn’t have any interest in talking to me or even looking at me. Everything is excessively packaged in plastic.

Miaochutianxiang
Another vegetarian restaurant located next to Yuantong Temple, and it’s apparently one of the best in this area. Make sure to allow yourself a few minutes to find the place. It’s tucked away behind the main street by a parking lot. Although it’s a bit hard to find, the restaurant has always been packed since its opening in 2019. The minute I walked in I was greeted by a smiley young boy at the cashier. Their menu focuses on a variety of popular local snack food, a bit on the greasy side, but utilizing fresh ingredients. They make a lot of ingredients in-house. Everything is worth giving a go here, the mock meat looks very convincing. My only complaint was their staff telling us the PP and PET plastic they were using was biodegradable (it’s not). It’d be great if they did some research on these types of plastics as telling customers this is biodegradable is misleading.

妙厨天香
在圆通寺旁的另外一家餐厅，它是这个地区最好的素食餐厅之一。记得给自己留几分钟来找这个地方。妙厨天香藏在主街后面的一个停车场附近。虽然有点难找，但自从2019年开业以来生意一直都很不错。我一进门收银台后一个年轻店员便微笑着和我打了招呼。他家的菜单侧重于当地的各类小吃，虽然会有些油腻，但用的都是新鲜原料。他们也自己制作很多的配料。这里的所有食物都值得试一试，仿真肉看起来很真。我唯一的一个吐槽是他们的工作人员告诉我们他们使用的 PP 和 PET 塑料是可生物降解的（其实不是）。告诉顾客这些塑料是可生物降解的会产生误导，所以如果他们有多做一些研究的话会更好。

As You Like Vegetarian Restaurant
An interesting vegetarian café/restaurant hidden in a tranquil alley off Wenlin Street - one of the most bustling streets in Kunming for food and drinks.
The kitchen is located on the tight first floor. You need to walk up a narrow wooden staircase up to the second floor to get seated. As You Like is one of the most characteristic restaurants in Kunming with antique decorations, and cute wooden tables and stools. It has been around for 10 years. They serve western style food. The menu is mostly vegetarian, with a few vegan options available. It’s a popular hangout spot for the local young generation. Service-wise, a bit more smiles will definitely draw more people to return. The staff seems a bit unhappy and gave me a “what the hell are you doing here” kind of look. The part-time waiting staff did a much better job at the service.

这是一家隐藏在文林街一个安静小巷里有趣的咖啡馆/餐厅。文林街是昆明最繁华的美食区之一。这家餐厅的厨房在比较紧凑的一楼，需要沿着一个很窄的楼梯到二楼才能坐下。古色古香的装修和可爱木桌凳子是有佳成为昆明最具特色的餐厅之一的一个原因。有佳目前已经营业十年了，供应西餐。菜单主要是蛋奶素食，也有一些纯素食可供选择。这里是当地年轻一代的热门聚会场所。服务方面来说，多一点的微笑肯定会吸引更多回头客。有佳的工作人员看起来有点不高兴，给我“你来这里干啥的”的眼神。兼职服务员似乎在服务方面做得更好。

Baihetianxin Vegan Restaurant (East Hongshan Road)
One of the best vegan restaurants in Kunming , located in a popular F&B area and opened in 2013. It is quite a modern establishment in big contrast to most of the traditional Chinese vegan restaurants. It’s popular for its mock meat dishes. The chain restaurant used to have multiple locations in town, however, only this location and one other a bit farther north survived. 60% of the ingredients here are organic and sourced locally from an organic farm. Fully vegan, no hidden dairy or eggs on the menu. The photos hung everywhere in the restaurant promoting veganism is a very nice touch. They also have some vegan pre-packaged food and ingredients neatly displayed on the shelves. Everything I tried here so far is GOOD and a good range of vegan desserts rarely found elsewhere in town are to die for.

百合天心(虹山东路)
这家位于昆明著名餐饮区的素食餐厅于2013年开业，是市里最好的素食餐厅之一。与大多数传统的中国素食餐厅相比，这是一家装修非常现代的餐厅。它以其仿真肉类菜肴而闻名。这家餐厅原来在市里有很多连锁店，然而只有这家和更北边的一家还在继续营业。这里 60% 的原材料都是有机的，而且来自当地的有机农场。所有食物是纯素，菜单上没有隐藏的乳制品或鸡蛋制品。餐厅里随处可见宣传素食主义的照片给人感觉很舒服。他们还有一些素食预包装食品和配料陈列在货架上。到目前为止，我在这里试过的菜都很美味，而且市里很难找到像这里让人垂涎三尺的各种纯素甜点。

Salvador Loft(Vegan Friendly)
Salvador Loft is one of the most vegan-friendly restaurants in town that offers meat substitutes for a great variety of options on the menu. Kris and Colin Started Salvador’s Coffee House in Dali, Yunnan in 2003. Their Kunming branch opened on Wenhua Xiang a year later. They have built their menu around fresh and healthy ingredients, and in 2016 they opened Salvador’s Loft as a new restaurant to take the healthy concept one step further. There they ferment their own tempeh and sauerkraut, they grow their own alfalfa sprouts and use locally-grown quinoa with a range of macro-bowl options, and they are always on the look-out for new and interesting locally-sourced ingredients. I find the food here a bit mild, but a good selection of hot sauces available will do the job.

萨尔瓦多阁楼(素食友好)

Jingxinyuan Vegan Restaurant(Buffet & A la carte menu)
Quite accessible by subway, it’s just a few minutes walk from Tuodong Station, Line 3. This restaurant is spacious. The first floor serves as the dining area for buffet food. Some of the buffet options are quite creative and can’t be found elsewhere. Their vegan lamb kebabs are highly recommended. They also sell home-made bread, baozi, dumplings, and a lot more on the first floor. The second floor is a proper sit-down restaurant where you order a la carte, with different sections of seating, including a couch area, lazy-Susan tables, and even separate rooms. There is a tiny shop on this floor selling different pre-packaged ingredients. The restaurant serves hotpot as well.

坐地铁到净心缘很方便，坐3号线到拓东站后步行几分钟就到了。这家餐厅很宽敞。 一楼是自助餐的用餐区。 自助餐很多菜品非常有创意，在其它地方找不到。 强烈推荐他们家的纯素羊肉串。 他们还在一楼出售自制的面包、包子、饺子等等。 二楼的空间主要用于点餐，他们有不同的座位区，像沙发区，圆桌区，甚至单独的房间。这一层还有一家小商店出售不同的预包装食材。餐厅也供应火锅。

Sujixiang(Buffet)
This restaurant was opened in 2020 with a nice vibe and is very spacious. They mainly serve vegan buffet lunch and dinner, but they also have buffet hotpot and hotpot in a big copperware for a group to share in the winter months. The restaurant has a lot more options than most of other ones in town, but the food is a bit on the oily side. Hope they can assign a staff to supervise the food displaying area. The restaurant gets very busy as well as a bit chaotic. People might skip lines and talk over the food if there is no one watching them.
There are also some Chinese vegan pastries and ingredients available on the shelves near the front door.

这家餐厅于2020年开始营业，氛围很好，比较宽敞的用餐环境。他们主要提供素食自助的午餐和晚餐，但在冬季的时候也提供自助火锅和多人一起分享的火锅。这家餐厅比昆明其它大多数自助餐厅有着更多样菜品选择，但食物比较油腻。希望他们能安排一名工作人员监督食品摆放区。餐厅有时显得非常繁忙和混乱。如果没有人看管，很多顾客可能会插队并在取食物时说话。
在餐厅门口的架子上还提供一些素食糕点和原材料。

Zhongnong Organic Vegetarian Restaurant(Buffet & A la carte menu)
A hidden gem in central Kunming for vegan food and organic ingredients. The façade of the restaurant is quite unfitting to the theme, it is a mixture of multiple businesses, including a jewelry store，chiropractic clinic, organic grocery shop, and organic vegetarian restaurant. The organic grocery store on the first floor sells fresh produce directly from their farm and has a good range of pre-packaged organic, natural ingredients. They also sell organic soy sauce in bulk (remember to bring your own container). The packaging is excessive and unnecessary, with even most of the fresh veggies wrapped up in plastic.
The restaurant is located on the second floor.Just walk up the stairs at the rear of the shop. They serve very nice vegan organic buffet lunch(no buffet dinner). Please note, their salad dressing has dairy. In addition to the buffet, you can order a la carte throughout the day for stir-fried dishes. Their crossing-the-bridge rice noodles looks very popular, but I find the ingredients they use to be a bit pungent. They also serve vegan buffet hotpot.

中农有机生态素食馆(自助餐和点菜)
这家素食馆是昆明市中心的一颗很难被发现的宝石，餐厅提供素食和有机食材。餐厅的外墙与主题很不相称，这个企业是由珠宝店、脊椎按摩诊所、生态食材商店和有机素食餐厅等业态混合而成。一楼的生态食材商店直接销售来自他们农场的新鲜农产品，包括一系列预包装的有机、天然原材料。他们还出售有机散装酱油（记得自己带容器）。但很多产品的包装没有任何意义，连大部分的新鲜蔬菜都使用塑料包裹着。
生态素食餐厅位于二楼，从商店后面的楼梯就可以上去。他们提供非常好的素食有机自助午餐（不提供自助晚餐）。需注意，这里的沙拉酱含有奶制品。除了自助餐外，全天都可以点餐。他们的过桥米线看起来很受欢迎，但我发现他们使用的食材味道有些重。除此之外，他们也提供素食自助火锅。

Subingfang Vegan Bakery
Subingfang is the only bakery in town that offers vegan baked goods, mostly Chinese items. They bake everything in the back of the shop, freshly-made breads are nicely displayed for customers to choose. They also sell vegan renditions of some Yunnan specialties, like rose pastries which traditionally contain animal fat. They accept orders for custom-made birthday cakes as well. There are a range of pre-packaged vegan ingredients and snacks available on their shelves. Everything here is very affordable.

素饼坊是昆明唯一一家提供素食烘焙食品的面包店，主要是中式糕点。店里所有的商品都是在小店后面的厨房烘培的。新鲜出炉的面包被摆放地很整齐，供顾客选择。店里还出售一些素食云南特产，例如原本含有动物脂肪的鲜花饼。他们也接受生日蛋糕定制。货架也上有一些预包装的素食原材料和零食。这里的产品都非常实惠。

Sudu Vegetarian Restaurant
A new branch of Miaochutianxiang, the new restaurant has a new name as well. It’s located on the busy and touristic Guanghua street(Kunming Old Street). They have a small kitchen here, hence the options available are a bit limited compared to the other one. The menu is still dominated by local rice noodles and snack food. If you are up for some carbs and Yunnan vegan snacks, this is a great place to go. Everything is vegan except for their yogurt.

素渡是妙厨天香在2021年新开的分店，新餐厅也有一个新名字。它位于繁忙的旅游景点光华街（昆明老街）。不像老店，这里的面积有限，所以可供选择的菜品也有限。菜单上仍然以当地的米线和小吃为主。如果你需要碳水化合物或者云南的素食小吃，这个餐厅将是很好的选择。除了他们的酸奶之外，其它都是纯素。

Ruru Vegan Buffet Restaurant(Buffet)
Ruru is a nice vegan buffet option located on a quiet street with a bright turmeric exterior. Its windows and doors facing a quiet street makes it a great spot to dine and chill. Food options here are typically Kunming standard. One of the dishes worth mentioning is their deep-fried veggie balls. In addition to giving their food surplus away and offering discounts to reduce food waste, they reuse their cooked veggies to re-create their delish veggie balls. Some pre-packaged Chinese vegan snacks are available for sale at the cashier. This restaurant has been open for 9 years.

如如是一家不错的素食自助餐厅，位于一条安静的街道上，外观呈明亮的姜黄色。它的门窗面对着一条安静的街道，是一个吃饭和放松的好地方。这里的食物选择是典型的昆明标准。其中值得一提的一道菜是他们的油炸蔬菜丸子。除了赠送多余的食物和提供折扣以减少食物浪费外，他们还重复使用剩余的蔬菜来重新制作美味的丸子。在收银台可以买到一些预包装好的素食点心。这家餐厅已经营业9年了。

Nianhuayisu Vegetarian Restaurant
It was opened in 2019, located on the second floor of a mall/office building. Nianhuayisu is a spacious traditional Chinese style vegetarian restaurant. There is a section of shelves selling pre-packaged ingredients, a tea table by the front door, and a lot of seating for people to order a la carte. The second floor is mostly separate rooms with huge lazy-Susan tables for bigger groups to dine in.

它于2019年开业，位于一个购物中心/办公楼的二楼。拈花素食是一家宽敞的传统中式素食餐厅。有一部分货架出售预包装食材，前门旁边有一个茶几, 餐厅有很多座位供人们点单。二楼大多是独立的房间，有巨大的圆桌餐桌，供多人用餐。

Juezhengjing Vegetarian Restaurant
This new branch of Juezhengjing was only opened in the September of 2021, the first location is in the western part of the town and is one of most popular restaurants for vegan/vegetarian food in Kunming. The new restaurant takes up an entire building and is nicely designed with smaller tables on the first floor and tables for bigger groups on the second floor. They have exactly the same menu. The food is slightly influenced by Sichuaness cuisine, packed with flavors and a bit oily. The mock meat dishes are very convincing and aesthetically presented.

觉正净素食
觉正净新店于2021年9月才开业，第一家店位于昆明市西部，是昆明最受欢迎的素食餐厅之一。这家新餐厅占据了整座大楼，设计巧妙，一楼有小桌子，二楼有供多人用餐的桌子。这两个店的菜单完全一样。菜式略受川菜影响，味道浓郁，略油腻。假肉菜品的呈现颇具艺术感，且足以以假乱真。

Jixiangsu(Buffet & Snack Food)
This restaurant is the first branch of Sujixiang just down the street. They were owned by the same people, but the two parted ways in 2021 and this one changed the name. (The food is still mostly the same though.) It is also located next to the popular Yuantong Temple in central Kunming. It serves buffet for lunch and dinner. The food is a bit oily here as well. They also have other local snack items on the menu for a la carte, eg. rice noodles, yellow pea noodles, baozi, Yunnan fried potato, roast tofu, etc
Cost: buffet 20 RMB per person, there are also snacks to order a la carte
