如果——吉卜林
英国著名诗人、散文家、小说家鲁德亚德•吉卜林（Rudyard Kipling，1865-1936）出生于印度孟买，吉卜林的成就很高，他的作品简洁凝炼，充满异国情调，吉卜林的作品在20世纪初世界文坛产生了很大的影响，由于吉卜林的“观察的能力、新颖的想象、雄浑的思想和杰出的叙事才能”，他于1907年获得诺贝尔文学奖，成为英国第一位获此奖的作家，也是至今诺贝尔文学奖最年轻的获得者。
约瑟夫•鲁德亚德•吉卜林一生共创作了8部诗集，4部长篇小说，21部短篇小说集和历史故事集，以及大量散文、随笔、游记等。他的作品简洁凝炼，充满异国情调，尤其在短篇小说方面，是无与伦比的。马克•吐温曾赞美吉卜林的作品说，“我了解吉卜林的书……它们对于我从来不会变得苍白，它们保持着缤纷的色彩；它们永远是新鲜的。”
吉卜林的诗词创作丰富多彩，感情真挚，一首在英国脍炙人口的的著名短诗《如果》就是其中的代表作，在1995年BBC的“英国人最喜爱的诗”的民意调查中，这首立意于克制主义和淡泊主义的诗被选为吉卜林最著名的诗。
