Relish the Moment

Tucked away in our subconsciousness is an idyllicvision. We see ourselves on a long trip that spans the moment. We are travelingby train. Out the windows, we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearbyhighways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distanthillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn adwheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hillsides, of cityskylines and village halls.
But uppermost in our minds is the final destination.On a certain day at a certain hour, we will pull into the station. Bands willbe playing and flags waving. Once we get there, so many wonderful dreams willcome true and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a completed jigsawpuzzle. How restlessly we pace the aisles, damning the minutes forloitering---waiting, waiting, waiting for the station.
“When we reach the station,that will be it!” we cry. “When I’m 18.” “When I buy a new 450SL MercedesBenz!” “When I put the last kid through college.” “When I have paid off themortgage!” “When I get a promotion.” “When I reach the age of retirement, Ishall live happily ever after!”
Sooner or later, we must realize there is no station,no one place to arrive at once and for all. The true joy of life is the trip.The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us.
It isn’t the burdens of today that drive men mad. Itis the regrets over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear aretwin thieves who rob us of today.
So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, climb moremountains, eat more ice cream, go barefoot more often, swim more rivers, watchmore sunsets, laugh more, cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. Thestation will come soon enough.
在我们的潜意识之中隐藏着一幅田园诗般的风景。我们仿佛置身于一次横跨大陆的迢迢旅途之中。我们乘火车而行，领略窗外流动的风景：附近公路上驰骋的汽车、十字路口处挥手的孩童、远山坡上吃草的牛羊、发电站里冒出的滚滚尘烟、成片的玉米和小麦、平原和山谷、群山和绵延的、天空衬托下城市的轮廓以及乡间的庄园宅第。
可是我们心中想的更多的却是最终的目的地。在某天的某一时刻，我们将会进站。迎接我们的将是演奏的乐曲和飘舞的旗帜。我们一旦到了那儿，许多美妙的梦想就将成为现实，我们的生活也将变的完整，就像一幅拼好的拼图。可我们现在在车厢过道里烦躁不安地跺来跺去、咒骂火车的磨磨蹭蹭。我们等待着，等待着，等待着火车进站。
“等我们一进站，就万事大吉了！”我们呼喊着。“等我18 岁的时候。”“等我买一辆新的450LS奔驰轿车的时候！”“等我供最小的孩子念完大学的时候。”“等我还清抵押贷款的时候！”“等我升官晋职的时候。”“等我退休，我从此就可以过上幸福的生活啦！”
可是我们迟早会认识到，人生之旅并没有车站，最终我们也没有地方可以到达。生活的真正乐趣就在于旅行的过程，而车站仅仅是个梦，它总是可望而不可及。
真正让人发疯的不是今天的负担，而是对昨天的悔恨以及对明天的恐惧。悔恨和恐惧就像一对生窃贼，将今天从我们身边夺走。
那么就不要在车厢过道里徘徊了，不要算计自己已经走了多远。换一种活法，去攀登更多的高山，多吃点冰淇淋解解谗，经常光着脚闲游漫步，在更多的河流里畅游，多欣赏夕阳西下，多点欢笑，少些泪花。我们必须在前进的过程中生活，车站很快就会到来。
