44 Monthly: collective writing/editing experiments

The collective writing project 44 Monthly is a direct response to the COVID-19 when it widely hit Chinese cities early 2020. It’s a collaborative effort reacting to shared individualized quarantine experience. In accordance with the leaderless and open-to-all principles of Theater 44, 44 Monthly allows participants to be creative in their own ways, as long as they follow rules which were designed for the project to self-operate.

Six participants, each having 24 hours for one turnaround, edit on the same document in the order decided by lotting. They can add, delete, change any content—text or visuals—in the duration of their one day. After two turnarounds and a collective editing day, the edited document is finalized and ready for print.

In 44 Monthly you will find fiction, poetry, emoji, theory, cartoon, group chat screenshots, fake official documents, love letter, alternative histories… The first four issues of 44 Monthly is themed Dictionary of Violence, in response to events happening in 2019-2020, for instance protests in Hong Kong and around the globe, the #MeToo movement, and the pandemic. Collective writing is an attempt to archive and intercontextualize some of our common feelings during crises, as well as to connect and cure. Till this day, the fifth Monthly is sending to print.

For an exhibition invitation in Macau, some members adapted the stories and motifs in the first three issues into a radio show. Listen to the show (in Cantonese): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BuLPc0m47nimK_BJHd1-Krz1oW-8ddYB/view?usp=sharing

Another experiment under 44 Monthly is a collective video editing project with similar rules but different medium. The result is a 25 minute long video essay with keywords such as progress, farewell, self-transformation, and so on. Watch the video online: (link to be added)

About Theater 44

Theater 44 is a collaborative network taking theater as methodology with participants from many disciplines and around the globe. For each edition, Theater 44 unfolds a different topic by organizing workshops, performances, reading sessions, writing, design, and exhibition presentations. Rather than having a unified voice and rigid labor division, Theater 44 seeks to bring together individual creativities by designing conceptual frameworks that are leaderless and open to all. The creative process of Theater 44 maintains power decentralization as much as we can and follows the ethics of prefigurative politics. In early 2020 during the COVID-19 crisis, we start the ongoing collective writing project 44 Monthly
