金杜艺术中心十分荣幸地宣布将于2020年7月7日开始呈现与伦敦白教堂美术馆第八次合作的国际电影项目。由于新冠肺炎疫情期间所采取的限制措施,放映一直于金杜艺术中心线上及相关社交媒体平台上进行。基于疫情日趋缓和,后续放映系列我们将重新采取实地展映的形式。2020年,金杜艺术中心作为“国际艺术家电影”项目的参与机构之一,放映一系列以“语言”为主题的影像作品。“国际艺术家电影”关注国际重要影像作品,作品包括金杜艺术中心在内的国际艺术机构作为全球合作伙伴共同推荐。每个机构提名推荐所在地区优秀作品,在这一年中这些作品将会在全球所有合作艺术机构中展映。
本年度第三期放映的作品是来自南非艺术家莱拉托·沙迪的《Mabogo Dinku》(2019)。莱拉托·沙迪的作品质疑常见假设,批判西方历史观,使那些不可见或被忽视的东西变得清晰而直观。 她重点批判了西方历史就是世界历史的假设。
作品中,艺术家通过自己的双手演绎神秘的手势,并以一种南非语演唱了民间诗歌。由于艺术家讲述的是南非种族隔离期间那些被边缘化的,不可言说的人民历史,因而她没有针对这些字眼和手势的含义提供字幕或引导。艺术家没有采用她曾在学校教过的殖民者历史,那还有什么样的历史可以被讲述?此外,将片中的叙述语言翻译成英语或其他主要的西语语种,旨在向作为“通用”语言的西方语言致敬,而继续将其他的母语语种归类为“其他”语言。
莱拉托·沙迪出生于南非梅富根,目前生活和工作在柏林。她于2006年毕业于约翰内斯堡大学,并在柏林白湖艺术学院获得空间策略硕士学位。沙迪的作品涉及动态影像、行为表演和装置,经常采用重复性的流程方式创作。她的作品曾在第14届巴西库里蒂巴双年展和在非洲当代艺术博物馆等国际性的展览中展出。她曾在2016年获得约翰内斯堡大学校友迪格尼塔斯奖,2018年获得罗马纳别墅奖,2019年获得柏林参议院研究工作补助金。她的作品曾被泰特现代美术馆、德国新柏林艺术协会影像部门和Iziko南非国家美术馆收藏。

KWM artcenter is pleased to present its eight collaboration with the Whitechapel Gallery, London from July 7th, 2020 onwards. Caused by COVID 19 restrictions, the screenings have been shown on KWM artcenter’s online and social media platforms so far this year. Due to the improved situation after this screening, we will return to the live screening platform in the space. Throughout 2020, KWM artcenter will be showing a series of moving image works as part of the Artists’ Film International (AFI) project, this year, based on the theme of language. AFl celebrates moving image work and is selected by a global partnership of arts organisations including KWM artcenter. Each nominates an outstanding work from their region which is screened across each venue during the year.The third film this year is Mabogo Dinku (2019) by South African artist Lerato Shad. Lerato Shadi’s work challenges common assumptions to critique Western notions of history and make visible that which is invisible or overlooked. In particular, she critiques the assumption that Western history is world history.In the video, the artist’s hand makes enigmatic gestures and she sings a folk verse in a South African language. But she provides no subtitles or guidance on what the words and gestures mean because she is narrating the un-narratable, the history of her people, marginalised during apartheid South Africa. The history she was taught at school is the history of the coloniser, which she rejects, so what history can she tell? Furthermore, the translation of the language into English or other dominant western language would pay homage to western languages as the “universal” one, continuing the boxing in of others’ mother tongues into the languages of the “other”.Lerato Shadi was born in Mahikeng, South Africa, and lives and works in Berlin. She graduated from the University of Johannesburg in 2006 and earned a MA in Spatial Strategies from the Weißensee Academy of Art in Berlin. Shadi works across video, performance and installation, often employing repetitive processes. Her work has been included in international exhibitions, most recently at the 14th Curitiba Biennal in Brazil; Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town. She has been awarded the Alumni Dignitas Award of the University of Johannesburg in 2016, the Villa Romana Prize in 2018, and the Berliner Senat Arbeitsstipendium in 2019. Her work is in the collection of the Tate Modern, n.b.k. Videoforum, and Iziko South African National Gallery.
